Looking for comments on FAN Upgrades

Several of you have upgraded the standard 12V fan(s) that Jayco installs. How about some comments on what you selected, why, cost, ease of installation, etc. so that those of us who are considering the upgrade can make a more informed decision.

For instance, would something like a Vortex fan be just as good with a Maxx Vent Cover vs. an integrated unit?

Which brands are best and why? Quiet? Amount of air it moves?

I did the vortex fan 3 speed upgrade on the BH vent in my unit. The Northern Breeze came standard in the forward bath so I now have high power fans on boths ends of the unit. They are both as loud as each other with no advatange to each there. The new fan does move air quite well compared to the standard issue fan that came with the unit. Having power there made it an easy install too since you just need to drop the 4 screw inner trim ring and wire it in. Maybe 30 mins.

I cannot comment on any other as I have no experience with Fan-tastic but hear very good things about them too. The exterior ones might give you a slight advantage on sound since they are outside the unit.

I've seen comments made by folks that also installed a rheostat saying that it really cuts down the noise since you can select something other than full on or off.

I changed over to the large MaxxAir cover with the integrated fan. I chose that one because I needed a rain cover and I didn't want to break the seal on my new roof. So far so good. It moves a lot of air and has made a huge difference --- I run my A/C much less now.

FYI--just be sure the fan motor is rated for use with a rheostat , some are some are not. Larry

I did the Vortex with MaxxAirII vent cover. The fan moves significantly more air than the factory vent fan. I went with the MaxxAir II vent cover so there would be enough area to vent the the high CFM fan. I suspect the standard MaxxAir cover would be fine but it was only $5 difference so I went with the II. Best thing about this mod was it was quick and easy with no breaking of factory roof seals.

The entire project took about a hour.

That is exactly why I started the thread in the first place. Camping World has the Vortex on sale for $49 and the cover is probably another $35 or so. That's a cheap combo if it works well and from your experience, sounds like it does.

Quahog, go for the 3 speed, 2 direction one if you do it. That is the one I have so it allows me to control it better for sleeping and such. I think it is a little more and you can find them on e-bay as well. Heng's I think is the manufacturer. Ran about $75.00 or so for me at the time. No seal breaking as mentioned, just 4 screws, crank mechanisim and wiring.

I think I saw that one... is this it? Sorry, it wouldn't let me snag the photo.

Yes, the Vortex And MaxxAir II combo works very well.

I have the single speed vortex. If there is a variable speed option I probably would have purchased that one but I didn't see it available when I did mine, but I wasn't looking for it either. The 26BH has a rear bath and running this fan with a window opening in the front is very capable of exchanging the air in the entire TT. Not sure a reservable fan would useful for me just based on the location of the bath.

2 weeks ago while camping we had significant rain one night and the cover worked like a champ keeping the rain out while leaving the vent open and fan on. We had almost no notable condensation in the morning.

I just did the Vortex variable speed (3 forward, 2 reverse) conversion in my 01 Qwest. Overall it was a great upgrade from the factory fan. Super easy to do. I am not a HUGE fan of the adapter knob to open/close the original vent cover. The knob is super close to the fan cover and it barely drags on it. Just makes it a tad harder to turn the knob to open or close the vent lid.

My goofy sheepskin pillow/vent cover still fits by the way.

That's the one Quahog. For the extra $30.00 I think it's worth it. Also I have the Max Air II over it and it's pretty much 100% waterproof from rain unless driven by wind sideways of course.

My vents are power lift so no knobs and it's a little tight when closed but is still 100% operational.

I have the Fantastic Fan installed in my bathroom. 3 speeds in or out. I have the regular air maxx vent cover. I leave my vent open most of the time and have never had water come in. The Fantastic Fan moves so much more air than the original fan did.

Just installed the Vortex 3 speed fan and it's a nice step up from the one that came with the trailer. Thanks for the suggestion, all.

Maybe tomorrow. I hope to take epics of the EMS-HC30 too. Fishing that cable took me a long time!

Too late - but I did the Maxxair Turbo/Maxx

Motivation was noise - the fan is a bit farther out in the ducting - if that makes since. It is a fair amount quieter than the Fantastic Fan I had in the old trailer.
