A short while ago, DW ( with some help from mother nature's wind) decided to customize our main entry door with a breather hole. The door stop post did its job by keeping the door from slamming into the side of the trailer, but flexed so much it made it off the catch and into the door.
So the thinking begins. How am I going to repair this? What can I invent to keep it from happening again? And make it look like it was factory?
I came up with an idea to make a stop plate to not only cover the hole but keep it from happening again.
I made it out of 11ga. The radiuses are from a 20ga shotgun shell brass. This project gave me the excuse to buy a disc/belt sander too. I drilled the holes the same to match and reuse the holes in the door. I bought some black aluminum flare rivets to match also.
I sent the plate out for powdercoat. I ended up pulling out the piece that was punched into the door and filled the hole with some silicon and put the piece back in place. I also coated the entire back of the plate with silicon to make sure everything is water tight. Once the plate and catch got riveted in place I also ran a very small bead around the plate.
As an added bonus, I bought an assortment of GM rubber door stops and attached one of the thicker ones to the door stop post itself. I also decided to move the door post to a lower corner location as to keep it from happening again.
All the factory had to do is put one of these rubber stops on the end of the post and none of this would have happened, but....
It's all good now and I got a new sander out of it. Win, win. Lol!
