Need mod for Battery and LP tanks.

So I was getting the rig ready to haul to the dealer to get the axle lift recall work done tomorrow and noticed that the battery box strap was off, with a sinking feeling i pulled up the cover and yep some #^$#% had made off with my battery
Side of house, plane view from sidewalk and street, and easy to see from 3 neighbors and they got clean away with it. Good thing i have a spare, but it is a bigger one and has a larger box that wont fit in the factory angle iron box so I did a little modding and the box fits now
I don't want to replace the LP tanks too cuz some #### wants them so I would like some ideas on how to secure them. I have seen the "drill hole thru big wing nut and hold down clamp and padlock them together. It seems to me that the clamp just holds with little bumps and this could be defeated with a good push on the tanks to break them loose. Are there any other ways to secure LP tanks to the rig?
I do plan on doing the tool box mod this spring so I don't need to bring the battery in every night. that means i will need to move the tanks so adding something to it should be easy.

I have a chain and paddlock on out tanks. Thankfully the batteries are a pia to get to on our trailer so I really don't worry about them.

Any lock can be defeated... the idea is to make it enough of a PIA for them to move on to easier pickings...

Exactly, a thief wants something quick and quiet so a chain and lock adds a step they may not want to deal with.

Hummm, Chain, lock and holes thru the tie down, that should be a PIA. Or at least take them long enough to be see so we can get the K9 on them.

I use a heavy cable lock to lock the tank to the tongue. So far it has worked well.

Battery theif made off with about 25 from the lot where my neighbor and I store. Missed mine but got his. I've settled on removing the batt while in storage. The single propane tank is a PITA to remove so I haven't done anything to it. Planning on installing double tanks with the all-thread and big wing nut and will use chain, cable or some other gimmickery to "secure".

Hummm….. I pulled the battery on my car the other day to do some work. It has a clamp that holds it the battery in place with a single bolt. As you tighten the bolt is secures the battery from bouncing around. If you made something similar using a security head screw, it could be a PIA for a thief.

Looking at the security head screw options I like the Tri-Wing (never used it). I have used the Snakeye Socket pinhead and the Torx pinhead. The pinheads are fairly easy to bypass, with a screwdriver and a hammer (or even your palm of your hand is sometimes enough). If you did a counter bore to recess the head so no wrench and get a bit on it. I think that would qualify it for a PIA for a thief.

I'm a little late to the party here, but I found that I could use my safety chains that I hook up to the truck to lock up the battery box. I just pulled one of them up from underneath and behind the battery box Between the battery box and propane tanks) and pulled the other one over the front. Then I just pulled them tight as possible and stuck a lock on it. It's on there pretty good, bit I'm sure a thief could probably get it off after messing with it for a while, but hopefully it would deter a thief from even trying. I keep my trailer on the side of my house next to the garage, and there is a cinderblock wall on the other side with a iron gate in the front. Hope this little tip can help others out.

I put this on my 2008 197. A couple of good suggestions on this thread by others as well. I have a new 2012 197 now, and will do the same sort of thing, and will include the tips given in th attached thread.

I am going to do this mod for my batteries. I have been involved on two or three of these installs and they work great. This is a 48-inch side mount truck tool box... Will hold four each 6VDC GC2 batteries.



On my propane tank i just run a long shank lock thru the twist handle and the frame shown here.

Anything to slow them down is about all you can do...

sad aint it? our local Jayco dealer will not put batteries, LP tanks and sometimes even the spare tires on the units that are on the lot due to theft issues.
