My guess is that they want extra protection so the hatch doesn't come open while going 65 mph down the road with the shower hose flailing in the breeze (although I like BrentB's response better).

It only works if you remember to lock it. Saw a pop-up going the other way on I90 Monday with the shower hose waving in the slipstream!
