New Shelves in Bedroom Closets

Put some upper and lower shelving in the bedroom closets this evening. Easy job except that there was barely any room to work in there, especially that narrowest closet.

LOL! I was seriously JUST thinking of doing almost exactly the same mod in my wardrobes!

What brackets and screws exactly did you use for that top shelf? I have this fear about putting screws into my outside walls and going straight through the aluminum skin!

The brackets on the upper shelves were simple L brackets. The screws were only 1/2 inch length. I used several on each bracket and the shelf seems very secure and able to hold decent weight but nothing super heavy.

For the bottom you can see I used exact same length legs which I screwed into the wall about 1 inch from the top and bottom. I used longer screws, of course, but made sure only about 1/2 inch went into the walls. Then I screwed the shelf down to those legs with a single screw from above each leg. The bottom shelf should be able to hold significantly more weight since its sitting on legs.

By having screws that did not go more than 1/2 inch into the RV walls it managed to secure these without piercing through the other side of the outside wall or inside bedroom wall.

This is another one of those things I wish I had done shortly after buying the RV. But until recently I didn't have the nerve to drill any holes of any sort into a new trailer. It's not like drywall that you can just patch, sand, and paint. It's a bit more "permanent" and that always freaks me out a little bit. 😬

By having the upper shelves it gave me a place to mount battery powered lights. So that was a nice extra too.

What are the dimensions of the shelves? how far above the clothes rod did you go? how far from the bottom is the shelf?

The bottom shelf is about 10.5 inches from the bottom of the closet and is about 16 inches deep. This seemed to give enough space under it and on it for most anything that we would want to put there. It does intrude a little on the clothes hanging but not too bad. Could go 13 inches deep instead for less interference with clothes hanging. But we wanted more shelf space. We don't hang that many clothes up so no problem for us to let them turn to the side a little to fit okay.

Here is a picture with a jacket hung up in there.

The upper shelf is about 2.5 inches above the clothes hanger bar. That keeps it from interfering with the placement and removal of hangers. That one is also 16 inches deep but because of the curve in the back it brings that shelf right to the front of the opening. Well... up to the front as much as you can get since you can't get completely to the opening due to some wood supports that are in the way but this is as close as I could get it.

With the 16 inch depth I can put folded bath towels on the shelf and they fit perfectly right to the edge. My wife will put her purse on the top shelf with some hung up shirts and a few folded things on the base of the closet. Some spare bed linens will go on the base under the bottom shelf. This makes good use of this closet which used to have things hung and then mess of things sitting scattered about the base due to no shelves.

Sorry about the sideways pictures. They turned that way using my iPad vs. iPhone. Didn't expect that to happen.

... if u ever needed more strength on the upper shelf, u could always use a thin horizontal trim board running the width of the shelf in place of the metal brackets. Those horizontal trim boards could then have a few more screws than the metal brackets, but more importantly, could also be coated with a very strong adhesive. We mounted a small decorative board with 3 coat hooks onto the wall that houses the fridge. It just has a few very small screws in it, but the real strength comes from the powerful adhesive bonding it to the wall. At any given time there are at least 10 coats, rings of keys, hats, purses, etc. hanging off that thing with ease.

oh forgot to mention: Love your mod! adding shelving to the side closets is definitely something I need to do too. Currently we just use baskets in behind on the bottom but they are a pain to access and don't do all that much to organize things.

I like the idea of adding adhesive as well as screws. Even with a bunch of them, I would be afraid they would strip right out of that luann (or whatever that thin wall board is).

I thought I had a plan for my shelves, but this thread is giving me some great ideas!

We use our closet almost the same as Newbold, and it gets annoying having stuff scattered around in the bottom, and having to dig around for what you're looking for.

I also used some of those same battery powered puck lights in my closets (DW left hers on and killed the batts in hers the first trip after I installed them ) , but here in the TX heat, the adhesive on the back doesn't stick anymore. So when I finish the mod, I'm going to use screws to mount them more permanently.

I always had good luck using the CLOSETMAID brand shelves kit (LOWES) and cut to fit. They are designed to be pretty strong... Comes in different arrangements and sizes and color. Can be repainted to match your decor...

Yep I screwed my light pucks to the upper shelf. They won't be coming off now.

Might do the adhesive if we ever want put any weight up there. At the moment it seems surprisingly strong. It's probably going to just hold a purse or folded clothes so nothing much really.

Yeah I sort of figured that after I posted the comment; not likely to be much weight on that shelf.

However, if you ever decide to store your bowling ball on that closet shelf, give the glue idea some more consideration ;-)

Great ideas. I have been wondering what to do about all the wasted space in those closets

We just bought our 2015 28BHS this weekend!!! (previous was a 2012 Trail Runner 25SLE)
I did the same kind of shelving in our previous trailer with the trim pieces that canuckowner is mentioning. I added some No More Nails adhesive to the strips and used a small brad nailer to keep them solidly in place. It worked great.
Now I'm thinking of how to make it better in the new trailer. I like the idea of the shelf on legs - makes it less permanent if I want to make a change. Maybe a couple of them stacked on top of each other would work?!?
Seeing that the trailer is gone to storage for the winter I have a few months to come up with my next brilliant plan.
If you have any other suggestions I'd love to hear them!!

The legs made the shelf super strong and I didn't have to use glue or a lot of screws in the paneling. So it could be removed without leaving behind a bunch of damage inside the closet.
