New Sofa Unit for Slide

We are currently in the process of replacing our J-Steel Sofa. There are only two of us and grand children have outgrown the age where they want to come along anymore. So there is really no need for converting anything for extra sleeping space. The current sofa is shown below on the left. The current issues are that the seat cushions sag at the front and are not comfortable to sit in for any length of time. The arm rests do not go back far enough to use. You cannot see the TV from the far left end of the Sofa. They have drink holders in the arm rest that don't fit any cups that we have. So there is no convenient place to put snacks or reading material.

We decided to remove the sofa and replace it with a unit that has a love seat and end tables. Since the bottom of the slide is 13" off the floor and goes over the wheel well, it really has to be a custom built unit. I've modeled what we are intending in the second picture. The wood will be Oak, the same as the current interior and there will be doors made that match what is in the trailer, but are not shown in the model.

As you can see in the current unit, there is a fabric skirt that hangs from the slide to the floor. We will replace that with one from a fabric that matches the new cushions. I'll post pictures as the project progresses.

Looks good, keep us up dated. I like the end table type idea!

These Pics show the progress to date:
I made the front frame to match those of the existing cabinets. However I drilled and used dowels to keep them together.
The end units are then glued together and test fitted and trimmed to fit in place.
Finally, the top moldings are glued in place. My clamps were not long enough, so I came up with clamping a strip of wood it the center of the top. Then I could clamp each side to the center strip.

The next step is to sand, stain and varnish everything before installing.

Our previous project was to make new covers for the dinette cushions because the originals were getting rather worn.

When happy with your "Travel Home" that's the way to go, most people remodel their own regular living space too. Seems to me classy workmanship, you have my respect. No worries about warranty Happy RVing!

Hi, did you do this over the wheel well? Ours is a small slide and it has the wheel well and piping under it. I would LOVE to remove old uncomfortable sofa and replace but I don't know how we would do that with everything that is under it. Thanks

Here is the final result. Yes, mollismom, the slide does extend over the wheel well. The original J-steel sofa was mounted on brackets to the bottom of the slide and there was a fabric skirt to hide the stuff under it.

The new unit is built on the bottom of the slide and we fitted a new matching skirt to the platform to hide that stuff again. The new unit mounts to the bottom platform of the slide and was also fastened to the wall behind the sofa.

There was really no other choice but to build our own, because we could not find any premade furniture that would fit. I still have the old J-steel sofa if anyone would like it. Otherwise it will be headed for the dump since I do not have anywhere to store it.

Talking

That looks absolutely fantastic! Great job! Now, can you make one of my recliners a bit smaller so I don't have to pull it towards the door to close the main slide? I'm getting ready to cut some of it off with my circular saw and duct tape the ends, but my wife won't let me do it. So I guess I'll keep a pullin.

Can't wait to try it out. We have a week stay booked in Key West in January, but may have to try somewhere for a weekend between now and then.
