Potential Extra Storage above Microwave Oven

We have a 2011 Jayflight 23FB.

We have noticed that above the microwave oven is a sort of framed in panel that could easily be removed. It's probably just stapled to the framework from the back side. What I would like to do is remove the panel and see if there is a shelf or board installed right above the microwave oven. If there isn't, I could easily add one.

What I am thinking is that if we were to add a shelf here, we could create a generous "pocket" and use it for extra storage in the Kitchen.

Has anyone ever investigated this option?

Yes. It's been done by just about everyone on here that has that panel above their microwave. I did it in my 2017 Jay Flight 28BHBE.

You'll have to install your own brackets to hold the shelf. You'll have cut out your own shelf too. BigJohnD did it on his 28BHBE. That gave me the idea to do mine.

Just make sure you have enough air circulation around the microwave. You don't need to be starting a fire in there..
