Rear Hitch Receiver

I'm getting ready to go full time. Adding a hitch carrier to the rear hitch receiver on my trailer will give me some nice storage for those less used items.
My idea....get a hitch carrier, the size is 60Wx20Dx6H, then I want to add a box that will fit in the carrier that I can lock and is pretty much weather proof. I like the diamond plate boxes but can't find a decent size for a decent price.

Have any of you done this? Ideas on boxes? Pictures??

Thanks!!

Well I guess it all depends on what you consider a decent price but none of them are exactly cheap. Probably looking for more a tool chest than regular crossover type truck box but no reason you couldn't mount a crossover type box on it as well
here is many pages of options certainly not all brands but several for sure it has all kinds of boxes in it so you will have to look for the right type and size you want. In any case they have from lower end to higher end. As far as weatherproof they all are to a large degree. All they really need to have is weatherstripping along the top edge. I have never had one of my truck boxes leak in 30 years of use in various types or brands. Generally the more expensive the nicer the unit but I have certainly had some cheaper ones work just fine.

I'm still looking but I am now thinking a good sturdy rack and just get a weatherproof cargo bag. Only concern with that is securing it against theft.
I guess I could put a lock and cable around it?

Any other ideas for this configuration?

Just remember that rear receiver is only rated for 300 pounds. I would suggest getting an aluminum cargo rack to save on weight. Also be aware of how much the box weighs. The weight adds up fast

Spower I added an aluminum rack and tool box to mine. I drilled through the bottom of the tool box and through the slats on the carrier and bolted it down. I have used it for over a year with no issues whatsoever.

If your hitch rack has a locking hitch pin it won't go anywhere. But I have a hitch tightener on mine that prevents it from rocking back and forth like I have seen others do frequently. That rocking will potentially damage the welds holding the receiver to the frame or even bend the frame.
I have this one on Amazon "StowAway hitch tightener, anti-rattle stabilizer."
Bolt your box to the frame of the rack and you should be ok as long as your weight stays down below the max.

Harbor Fright has both of what you are looking for. Both made out of ALM.

Attach your receiver to the frame not the bumper. Bolt it on.

I used the plastic box and it never leaked, a lot lighter too. Can't remember where I got it though.

Update!
I ordered a hitch carrier that is rated for an RV from eTrailer, it looks like a good sturdy one. I also ordered a Black Polymer box from Home Depot, just a little smaller than the carrier. I can lock the box so this combination will work good for me.
Again, my trailer does NOT have a bumper, the hitch is welded right to the frame.

Justlkn, I like your setup! I went with a little bigger carrier (60") and box.

Happy Trails Guys!!

My thinking about hitch receivers on the back bumper of a Travel Trailer. Added weight to the back of the TT will drop the tongue weight on the front. Would one of those bolt on hitch receivers bend the thin square tube bumper? Would 2 or 3 hundred pounds on the back bumper have to be countered on the front to keep the front/back balance close to the way it should be so there is no swaying? I have thought about one of these myself, but that question has always bothered me. I would like to put bulky things on our back bumper like folding chairs and a couple of 100 watt portable solar panels.

I would not recommend bolting on a receiver to the bumper. The metal is way too thin and you’d likely lose your load within the first few miles.
