Replacing Axle

Hey everyone,

My friend who also owns a 2018 174BH (we bought them together, he's one VIN number different than mine) was saying he would like to replace his axle with a stronger one to increase his carrying capacity. Is this actually possible or do the weight ratings depend on a lot more than just a stronger axle and suspension?

Hoping one of you experts can chime in on this one.

I think the frame size also comes into play. I have an Aframe camper which came in several models, the low end models came with 13 inch tires and a four inch tall frame rail. Mine has a toy hauler deck with 6 inch rails and 15 inch tires, my total weight loaded is almost 2500# more than the standard model even though the camper box is the same size. You don't want to find that weak link if you upgrade the axle and the frame can't handle it.

Axle size does play a large role in GVWR. However, if you look at suspension bolts for example, the same bolts are used for 3500, 5000, 7000# axles. I lifted a pop up and put a 3500# axle under it. I reinforced the stringers that run the length of the frame. Bigger axles will give you more carrying capacity within reason and potentially the ability to run larger tires.

Make sure you/he takes a lot of measurements before removing the stock axles.
