Smartguage vs Trimetric vs Volt Meter

I'm confused - and this thread is squarely aimed at Roy Brady

I guess after reading the boating forums a bit that there is no consensus. My personal goal is to know when the charge the batteries via the generator. I would be nice to see the current draw and/or charge rates, but unless something goes wrong I already pretty much know them.

Then I start thinking - if I'm just watching voltage then why don't I just put a cheap volt meter in?

I dunno - I am thinking the best thing I can get that is an easy install will win
