Spare tire lug nuts

I discovered that my spare tire lug nuts were not the same size as the trailer ones, for which I carry a socket. Rather than keeping up with 2 sockets, I replaced the spare tire bolts with carriage bolts and nylock nuts of the same size as the trailer. Might be something you want to check !

It is stupid, isn't it? On mine the lug nuts on the carrier for the spare are 3/4" and the wheels are, of course, are 13/16".

I just loop the 5 spare lugnuts through a spoke on the spare wheel with stainless lock wire. quick and simple. Haven't needed to change a flat yet but I probably jinxed myself now!

Different lugs for aluminum vs. steel wheels

Besides needing a different socket size, my Greyhawk has flat "swivel" lugs for the steel spare wheel and "conical" lugs for the aluminum wheels. It is good to be sure you have the correct lugs for all the wheels.

Right after I got our TT home, I went to Harbor Freight and picked p a breaker bar and deep well socket that fits the TT lug nuts. Both are stored right in the trailer so they will be there when needed.

The one time I did need to change a tire the drop down slide for the spare wouldn't budge. It made the job very difficult. I now check the slide once a year to make sure it will move.

Walmart carries these for < $13 - stores very nicely, has 4 sizes and enough leverage to break a lugnut free.

I store it in my front compartment like this:
