Trimming Bathroom Mirror

I was always concerned with the exposed sharp corner of our beveled edge bathroom mirror. The bottom right corner is where it is most natural to grab and open it to access the shelves.

So I decided to trim the bottom of the mirror with a piece of aspen stained to match the weathered look of the base cabinet. The wood piece provides a safe hand hold to open the mirror.

That looks very nice and what type of adhesive did you use to secure it to the back of the glass.
Your pictures are great for a step by step showing us how it’s done

It is a simple build and does not take to much wood working skill.

I cut a .5 x 1.5" piece to the width of the mirror backing (MDF) board. Then I glued a second piece of .5 x 1.5 wood that extended past the ends of the mirror that is wider than the mirror backing board. In my case, the vertical offset of the two pieces of wood was 7/8" to allow the back piece to overlap the mirror backing board on the back side and still clear the bottom of the cabinet when closed.

I then temporarily taped the glued pieces using double sided tape to the mirror backing board, and marked where to glue a third piece of wood that was .25 x 1.5 and about 1/32" below the bottom of the mirror (since the bottom of the mirror was not parallel to the bottom of the mirror backing board). After gluing the third piece on, I cut the ends to match the mirror width and ripped it along the length so the remaining 1/4" thick piece under the mirror would be a constant width of about 1/2".

After staining and clear coating, I used four 1" long washer head particle board screws shortened to .9" long to attach the trim to the back side of the mirror backing board after drilling pilot holes in the mirror backing board using a drill stop. Originally I though I would use the screws and thin double sided tape but found there was no need for the double sided tape.

View of the back side showing the four mounting screws:

Tip: do not position the fastener closest to the hinge to close to the end. You cannot get the drill in the area. I had to patch a hole and redrill.

Trimming Bathroom Mirror

Glad I trimmed the bottom otherwise the mirror could have fallen off and possibly injured one of our grand daughters who are camping with us if it had.

We have had very hot temperatures this last week and all the adhesive except a few inches at the top released. I noticed a bottom corner of the mirror was at the edge of the bottom trim. Very light pressure and the mirror released from the board.

I now have another project to do the vanity mirror as it should have been done by Jayco in the first place.
