Winter preparation

I just finished reading a Jayco article on insulating your camper if you plan on living in it during winter. I have spent some 10 to 20° nights in our camper and it got pretty doggone cold. Of course, I had no special preparations done on it because these were one night ventures. But I am wondering for those who may have used some or all of the recommended insulating and heat retaining tricks that I saw mentioned how effective they found them. The article discussed winterizing windows, doors, vents, rugs on the floor, heating tape on piping, heating blankets on tanks and skirting. I may have forgotten one or two. But since these puppies have thin walls, whether insulated or not, and the roofs being what they are, I just wonder the extent of the effectiveness of making those preparations.

I have never had the need to winterize for cold weather living but anything you can do to retain heat/keep out the cold weather would help. I have seen others that live in yheir units during the winter do what you have described.

I agree....., common sense should prevail at some point. IMO most RV's, even with some simple 'cold weather mods', just can't compete with sustained 'below freezing' temps. Hard to duplicate the comfort of a brick & mortar home base under the same conditions.

rent a very large propane tank

Large Propane tank for interior heat, and skirting. Skirting will cut out the cold air from entering the underside, and it will be your first line of defense against the cold. If your basement freezes, you lose water. Don't just rely on space heaters and optional fireplace for interior heat. Propane heat will heat interior and maintain some heat in basement to keep pipes from freezing.
