X213 overhead cabinet removal

Has anyone removed the overhead cabinets over the bed, we have a queen bed instead of a king and I’m wanting to remove those and build some shallow cabinets to the sides of the queen bed instead. Those overhead cabinets make me claustrophobic and at 6’4 I’m too tall to shimmy down to avoid hitting them.

Thanks to anyone who has attempted this!

Update

I’m just wondering if anyone can tell me what I’m going to find when I remove those cabinets. I’d like to have some idea of how it’s constructed and be sure there is no structural component to them.

Thanks!

I have no idea, but I also dislike the cabinets. I cant tell you how many times my wife or I have hit our heads, never mind the kids.

Curious to see what you find.

After cracking my head open and wrist a few times I applied furniture edge and corner guards (Amazon $14 for more than enough). The double stick tape didn't adhere well and I ended up adding more double stick tape. The dark foam hardly shows up and was easy to cut and fit.

I will get a picture of the installed foam if you want one.

Last year we replaced our mattress for a queen size one. The mattress is 8 inches thick so storage above the bed became a problem.
I took it apart and used the front to put it on the side of the bed. The furniture is held in place by a few screws on the ceiling and wall. To hide the holes in the wall, I applied a wall covering to lighten this corner. Beforehand, I removed and reinstalled the headboard. We are satisfied with the result.
