This is how it all started 3 years ago. Looked around for a 5th wheel I liked. This was it. Had the right amount of work to be done. Interior was spotless. Just a faded carpet. On the way home the front panel blew off. Price went down dramatically as I took it back when this happened. Well got home & decided to put a temporary/permanent patch on so we could camp the rest of the summer. Then the restoration began that fall and continues today.

Wow. Very, very nice. The work required to make your repairs was phenomenal. Excellent job, thanks for the updates and pictures.

Wires are back in & hooked up on both the AC & DC panels in the curbside back wall. The rotten slide side rear wall behind the slide is all back together & new as well. The laminated beam going across the top of the slide frame was rotten as well in the little piece of wall beside the slide out. I managed to splice a 2 x 8 onto it & keep it from twisting. The roof had to be replaced from the back toward the front about 4 feet. The rest of the roof for 17 years old 5th wheel looks pretty good.

I finally got around to the last of the rot. I took off the quick repair when I bought it as well. One disappointment albeit the coach is 17 years old & I believe this was a transition year from aluminum siding to filon. When stripping the front off to my disbelief there was no plywood underlay as in the rest of the trailer nut a heavy cardboard. For what felt like delamination was just this cardboard with the filon attached to it. I don't know why they did this. Made for a weak front end. The underneath of the overhang was also just aluminum skin & not weather proofed or water proofed in any way. spray from a rainy day of pulling could have water penetrate either the bottom of the walls or the underneath of the over hang. Oh well at least I can change that now. Out with the rot in with the improvements.

Do you plan to glue the sidewalls on all one piece and what kind of glue are you going to use?

What a great job excellent work! The wood on the front really didn't look that bad to me what made you decide to tear the front end off?

The whole front was loose as if it had delaminated. I there is rot in the 4 corners as well. I had made the stud walls for the front 2 years ago. They are ready to go in when I remove these old ones. I also use 2 x2 when I replace any studs. Original build was 1 1/2 x 1 1/8. Very confusing in the beginning. I plan on stapling the 1/4 Luan underlay onto the frame & gluing the filon onto it. I have some 3m contact glue I am using.

Are you going to glue it a section at a time rolling out the fiberlass onto the side as you go. I would think trying to get the whole side glued before beginning install would take too much time

The front & back walls are the biggest. The filon has been cut for these. Laying it down it will be sprayed on the back side & the Luan underlay will be sprayed. The sheet will be started from the bottom & pressed into place as it goes on. The glue is an industrial product. I have a friend that works for 3M. This was the best solution.

Cool I just think about the undertaking of trying to install a whole sidewall and it makes me shiver lol. Have you purchased new decals or are you going to do something different?

I'll look when I go out to the shop. This has been the problem since the beginning.

I am going to put a shelf under the bottom of the walls so the sheet won't fall down. Apparently this glue just needs to be pressed into place $& it won't peel back.

On the factory tour they had a machine that was on a track and with the sidewall layed down flat they sprayed a stream of some kind of urethane adhesive down the whole sidewall then put the skin on. it would be a lot different doing it vertical. I made the decision watching them build the units that I would be scared to try to undertake anything like you have. I restore old cars for a living and that's hard enough but there are some tv shows about companies that are now restoring old campers and I think they are fascinating

About 12 years ago I was at the Fleetwood plant in Lindsay here in Ontario & saw them do the same thing there. This has been the issue with a lot of people repairing fibreglass. I talked with a guy that use to build Award trailers here & he too was looking for a glue that would hold tight on the vertical. I thought of vacuum bagging but that would be a LOT of work to warp the trailer. When I put a temporary patch on when I first got it I used PL premium which I learned was not the ideal adhesive for that application.
