154bh trailer tire chains?

I've a JAYCO 154BH, so it' light and maneuverable. I'd like to know if anyone has any experience using snow chains on this (or for that matter, any towable trailer) type RV. Any comments, recommendations, observations, etc. would be welcome. If it's of any consequence I obviously do have and use a brake controller. Additionally, it might be of interest that my little 154BH is the Baja edition having 15" tires. TX for any assistance anyone can provide.

Tire chains are for TRACTION in snow. So why would you want to put them on your 145BH?

I have never heard of using chains on a trailer. I've towed all types of trailers (Not TT's) for years in all kinds of harsh weather and can not see any benefit to using them.

Chains provide traction to slipping drive axle tires so using them on a free wheeling trailer axle would provide no advantage in my opinion.

Some states such as Oregon have laws that require chains for trailers with brakes. Here is an excerpt from the "Minimum requirements" subsection of the Oregon chain law:

Light Duty Vehicles

Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) rating of 10,000 pounds or less such as a passenger car or light truck.
Light duty vehicles must use chains on one tire on each side of the primary drive axle. When towing, chains must also be on one tire on each side of one axle of a trailer that is equipped with a brake. Traction tires may be used in place of chains when the vehicle is not towing or being towed.

On the trailer the chains are intended to improve the braking ability for the trailer.

Washington has a similar law that applies to all vehicles or combinations of vehicles weighing 10,000lb or more.

We traverse some of the mountain passes in Eastern Oregon on our way to Utah, Nevada and Arizona 2 or 3 times a year. When those trips are in late fall or early spring we always carry chains for the truck and cable chains for the trailer. I have installed them a couple of times to make sure I know how to do it but have not yet had to use them for real.

If you live in an area with Les Schwab Tire Centers you can buy a set of chains to carry with you and return them for full refund if you do not use them, generally after April 1st.

Well there you have it: over 10,000 lbs. So a 154BH falls between the cracks

I guess its true - You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! I never knew chains were required for trailers...

I still do not see the benefit of them but some lawmaker apparently did.

It would appear so in Washington unless your GCW is 10k or above. My combo is right about 10k, but it's a moot point since we always go through Oregon where it applies to all vehicles.

As I've never been in a situation where I actually had to use them I'm not sure how much benefit there is either. The last time we were over Deadman Pass in eastern Oregon there was snow on the shoulder but the driving lanes were bare and wet. In Oregon I think it's $160 fine for not properly chaining up when required.

The brand of cable chain that Les Schwab sells is Laclede. I like them because they were designed to work in wheel wells with less clearance. There web site is Laclede Chain Manufacturing. On my 195RB Baja the tire is an LT235/75R15 which takes Laclede stock # 2019 in their Single Light Truck Cable Chains line. You can find them at other places like AutoZone or O'Reilly's as well - just google for "Laclede 2019".

154bh trailer tire chains

Thanks again to everyone providing me their comments. The observations have been very enlightening - even to several tire dealers in my area ! I now have what I need for my Jayco, all of which will hopefully meet my needs as well as complying with Oregon state regulations for travel trailer towing. - Jeff
