197 - Highball to Yellowknife!

My wife and I toured from just east of Regina, SK to Yellowknife, NWT. We just got back last night at supper time. Approx. 3500 miles. Yes, miles.

We spent one night in a motel. Our Ecobust F150 never gave a moment's trouble. We got socked in at Yellowknife by forest fire smoke for an extra few days, but enjoyed our stay there. A great trip overall. The roads were mostly all excellent, and not the heavy traffic like in the southern parts.

I went to an auto/RV dealer to check the price on a grey/black water tote and nearly fainted. $300!! I just hooked up and drove over to the dump at the campground. It was very quiet there, no lineups, no barking cheesehounds, no loud music. The only noise we heard was steady coming and going of aircraft of all sorts. Lots of choppers ferrying firefighters and supplies. The airport was only maybe a mile away.

Yellowknife is an interesting city, built on rock, like Flin Flon. Busy, busy place. I can recommend the Co-op grocery store there for the best ribeye steaks!

The little spot to the right of the scraggly tree above the picnic table is the sun. Pic was taken at 7 PM. The street lights came on at 5 PM, to give an idea of the smoke in the air.

Sounds like a great trip! 3500 miles is quite a adventure.
Not to sound like a nimrod but what is a cheesehound? We are a long way from your part of Canada.

Cheesehound is simply a dog, where I come from.

No, we only ate downtown once, at the Kentucky Fried Muck across the street from the grocery store downtown. Man, that is one busy store! Great selection of food. (The grocery store, that is! )

**Edit: I looked up the definition of cheesehound. Never heard that term used that way. I guess I lead a sheltered life.

We were there in the first week of June no smoke but cool 0c the first night and got up to 7c that day. Loved all the territorial campgrounds with 30 amp power and water. We did the Buffalo Airways tour, saw lots of Buffalo and calf's on the road and did you notice that every pond had at least one duck and there are lots of ponds.

Timber: I actually noticed that there were very few ducks along the road. Some bison here and there. I would suspect the wildlife took a severe beating in those burned areas.

Edit: Also, by the time we got up there, it had been dry for so long, a lot of the shallow sloughs were dry or nearly so. Saw a few Sandhill Cranes along the road on the way up.

This was parked in the Co-op parking lot, note the gun case. We probably saw about 80 Buffalo in total and two Sandhill Cranes. I did see a fox in the campsite in Yellowknife.
