1st Trip! 28DSBH and EcoBoost

Hey everyone - thought I would post a brief summary of our first trip with our White Hawk 28DBSH, towed by our F150 EcoBoost. My WDH is a Reese 12K and I have no sway control.

We live in the Canadian prairies, so flat and windy. Our trip was about 100 km (60 mi), so a nice distance for a first tow. On the way home the wind was going at 50kph (30mph), gusting to 70 (45) at our back then coming from the side. Similar on the way out, but the wind was a little less.

First of all, I thought the EcoBoost did great. With the tailwind, the mileage was crazy good (23 mpg) and when the wind was kicking our a$$ from the side, it handled fine. Considering I wasn't even tapping into it's power potential on this trip, I am confident it would perform fine with hills.

I will be looking for sway control. The sway was tolerable, but still a little uncomfortable for me (coming from a 19'). I was driving about 60mph and then lowered to about 55mph when the wind was coming from the side. I am thinking the Reese Dual Cam would be my best option, given that it's compatible with my WDH.

One thing that I will have to get used to is the fact that the drive will now be part of the vacation. I will not be able to fly down the highway with this bigger trailer. I found this part of the drive actually less stressful (not trying to "make time"). Plus, my wife enjoyed the slower speed, as she was able to see more.

No more interstates for this guy! Scenic routes all the way.

Derek

The drive is definitely part of the trip and must be enjoyed! As far as I'm concerned when I leave the driveway I'm on vacation. Safe travels!

Swift Current here, and I know the prairie winds you speak of

Cypress is our next destination and I can hardly wait!

Safe travels

Our F150 tows our trailer, through the mountains with ease. But I can't imagine not have a sway hitch!

We just bought a Jayflight 28 BHBE and my 2011 Screw Lariat with Ecoboost handle the mountains of WV easily. No concern. I researched a lot and chose the Equal-i-zer hitch. NOT the E2. My dealer installed, and the trip was a breeze. I have no experience towing something this large. So, I was nervous. No sway on interstate, even in wind and rain, getting passed by Semis. I paid about $200 more getting it locally, I'd buy online as you have time to get it, since you have something already. My 2 cents, with only 1 trip for experience.

Hey! Another flatlander with an Ecoboost! We bought a 2013 last summer. We pull a supposed "Ultra-lite" 197 with a slide-out. We haven't gone on any long trips with the truck, but have pulled the trailer on a couple of shorter trips. According to some, you won't make it to the end of the street with an Ecoboost.

Our truck is a Supercrew 4x4 with 6.5' box, large fuel tank, XTR. Mileage is poor heading into a wind, but I wouldn't expect otherwise. Truck suits us fine.

Enjoy the good cross-winds we get out here!

Update!

Bought a dual cam sway control and it performed excellent. Trip to Black Hills. Lots of hills and curvy highways. Passed by semis on I94 & 91, and I could feel the sway control doing its thing.

EcoBoost performed beautifully too. Put it in Tow/Haul mode and left the cruise control on. Didn't have to do a thing. Engine braked on the down grades perfectly.

Not much wind so mileage was around 23L/100 km (sorry not sure on MPG).

Two 7 hour trips to get here!

Thanks for the follow-up and great to hear that your TV/TT combination performed well

The Reese HP Dual Cam once dialed-in is a great WDH with integrated sway control.

If you get a chance feel free to post some pics of your travels in another thread.

Bob

Quick update. Made it back home with the only thing "breaking" was the black plastic fender coming off. These things looked flimsy and sure enough, one of them could not hold up to the wind on the highway and popped over the (washerless!) screw heads.

I just took the entire thing off and threw it in my pickup. I'll get it repaired under warranty to see what they'll do to improve it, if anything. Kind of silly to put those eyesores on an otherwise nice trailer.

Also, posted a few pictures in this post:

Edit:

I should also say that the entire trip was 3300 kms (aboout 2000 miles)!

We Just bought a 28dsbh and only drove it 40mi from the dealer. I am towing it with a 2006 silverado 1500 z71with 3.73 and hd towing package and equalizer hitch. It was raining for part of the trip. The truck pulls the trailer with ease. 60mph was smooth. 65/68 was no problem but the truck would down shift and rpms would up. Didn't have any sway issues. Passed and was passed by semis with no issues. Mountains would be my only concern. I looked into the ford eco boost and the numbers look good with the max towing package and 3.73 gears. Any comments on the eco boost. Other option is a Chevy 2500hd drama diesel.

No concerns with the EcoBoost and hills or mountains. There were some fairly long/steep grades on the trip to and in the Black Hills.

Also, passing was not a problem. Was able to accelerate from cruise speed around 62 up to 75-80 in a heart beat.
