2017 Jayco Jay Feather 23RLSW

Well, we decided on he 23RLSW and are trying to figure out where to put our "stuff". What are you doing with your kitchen garbage can? Don't like to have it sitting out all the time. Any suggestions?

That's what we do with our 23RLSW. Our trash can sits in front of the TV.

Otherwise we try to keep our "stuff" to a minimum as much as possible. It's a very nice trailer, but really doesn't have huge amounts of storage space for some things. It's enough, but just barely.

Unfortunately, no good spot for it. Could place inside front closet but would be very limited in size. We choose to just keep out placed in corner of TV and dinette, when traveling it goes below the couch.

Thank you. Thinking of taking out shelf in top triangular cabinet by the door, and putting it there. Will see.

We have the 23RL (same camper just the 2018 model) and we keep ours between the couch and the cabinets (we have the trifold sofa so it may sit differently than the jackknife). And it works well there. We bought a small oval shaped can and we empty frequently. Keep another can in bathroom.

We use almost that entire cabinet as a pantry, mostly for things like canned and boxed foods. Bottom stores some larger items.

Seriously, we've been just fine with a trash can in that corner between the dinette and the TV. Store it under the dinette when the slide is in for traveling.

Greetings. I'm new to the board and would appreciate any opinions some of you may have. I've just purchased a 2018 Nissan Frontier crew cab, with a V-6 and 4x4. Towing capacity is 6,100 Lbs., To glue Weight of 630 lbs., and GVWR OF 5,800 lbs. front axle:3,296 lbs., and rear axle: 3,331 lbs.
Just the wife and myself. Don't plan to tow with water in the tanks, and minimal cargo.
Very interested in the 23RLSW. Looking at all the numbers, and after discussions with the local Jayco dealer, it appears I should be fine. With that said, I would really appreciate any real world thoughts from some of you that have experience with this TT.
Thanks for any feedback.

How about feedback you won't like?

First, most dealers will tell you what you want to hear.

Long discussion follows:

The GVWR of the 23RLSW is 5995, which means when loaded you're going to put at least 700 lb. on the truck, perhaps up to nearly 900 lb. depending on how you load it (travel trailers are designed to put 10-15% of their weight on the hitch). This makes the truck's PAYLOAD capacity much more important than the TOWING capacity. What's the truck's payload capacity? It must be able to carry that 900 lb. hitch weight, PLUS passengers, fuel, luggage and other cargo. You may have to consult the yellow sticker - subtract curb weight from the GVWR, that's your PAYLOAD capacity. I found one resource that says max payload is 1460 lb., which leaves you a max of about 500 lb for payload other than your trailer. Looks like a possible ooops.

The truck's listed max hitch weight is 630 lb. You're already over that no matter what you do. That's another ooops.

And the truck's towing capacity is just a few pounds over the GVWR of the trailer. That's cutting it pretty close.

I'm thinking you're going to be marginal towing a 23RLSW with that truck. I tow mine with a 2010 F150, payload capacity is 1670 lb. Based on 2 years with this rig, I wouldn't want to tow anything bigger.

Too often we focus on the theoretical TOWING capacity and forget the tongue weight of the trailers we're going to tow. You can get into trouble that way.

Good luck!

Roger

I had a 2015 GMC Sierra Crew Cab with the 6 cylinder, when I purchased the truck, I had no plans on going camping with a travel trailer. Towing capacity was 7000lbs. Then we purchased a Jayco Hummingbird. It was all fine till we upgraded to a 2017 23RLSW.

I towed the new trailer home from the dealer and knew right away that the Sierra was not up to handling this trailer. The 23RLSW is alot bigger and heavier than the Hummingbird. At the end, I got it home and traded in the truck for a 3500HD Silverado Duramax cause I didn't want to worry about mountain grades. I know its over kill, but I see a fifth wheeler down the road

I would not even think about it with the Nissan. Plan to tow with water at times, cause we've been to places that has water and ended up with no water. Trust your inner voice. The dealer is just tell you what you want to hear.

When we sat inside our 2016 rlsw the question came up. Where are we going to put the garbage can? We decided that it wasn't a make or brake deal on the purchase. We have a tall oval shaped one we keep just inside the door on the right. We move it around sometime. We also like the floor plan. You can see what we tow it with below. Pulled it about 5,000 miles no problem. One thing that I missed when we purchased was that year 2016 they put in a 22.5 gallon gray tank instead of a 30 gallon that they had in 2015, 2017, 2018.
We were also concerned about storage but since we have been using it there is plenty of room for just about everything.

Same thing here: I'm still wondering if the 22.5 gal gray tank isn't a mistake in the specs, and the tank is actually 30 gal. Overall we think it's a great trailer for 2 people; we've had a grandchild with us for a couple of outings, and that gets awfully crowded.

I messaged with Jayco customer service and they checked with engineering and they said they put a 22.5 gray tank in that year but offered no explanation why.
I suspect they just had extra 22.5 gal tanks sitting around. It is a 30% decrease in volume and that does make a difference when boon-docking.
It makes no sense why they skipped that year.
I suppose I could put in 30 gallons and confirm one way or the other.

Asking Jayco directly is the best approach!

I would probably look at TT weight in at 3500-4000Lbs max . Give yourselves plenty of room to spare for payload. Happy hunting

Well, based on your earlier notes, your maximum tongue weight for that truck is 630 pounds. Working backwards, and assuming a trailer that puts 15% of its weight on the hitch, that gives a maximum GVWR for a trailer to match up with that truck at 4200 pounds. That would leave lots of spare payload in the truck. Good luck!
