Bonehead 101

Just returned from our maiden voyage in our Jay Feather 23RL. The trailer and its systems worked flawlessly. The operator, however, was a different matter. Got all unhitched, leveled and stabilized. Time now to put out the dinette slide. Oh no, halfway out the right side seems to bind up and the whole thing stops crooked. Bring it in and try it again. Same thing! By this point I'm trying to remember how to manually extend the slide. Mutter, mutter, *%!#! The owners manual is in the lower cabinet of the entertainment center just to the right of the slide. When I attempt to reach back in there to open the cabinet, I bring out the cabinet door that has been ripped from the cabinet frame. It was obviously open and the edge of the slide caught on it on the way out. Oh well, I broke it and now it's mine. The good news is that the slide mechanism does not appear to have been harmed and reattaching the door is a pretty straightforward repair.

DW took to storing CDs on the shelf below the TV in our 23RLSW. In their cases. Then I discovered after one trip that several of them had jumped off the shelf and were lying on the floor, under the slideout. Disaster waiting to happen. No more loose stuff on those shelves!!

Just wait until Bonehead 102, when you make the same mistake twice (been there, as well)

We all have to learn that lesson. We always make sure all cabinet doors are latched closed before closing the slides.

We have a habit of closing them but not snapping them completely closed when camping, hence the check off item of double checking.

Geez! If I’d known that everybody does it, I wouldn’t have felt so dufus. Seem like I’m in good company.

They should make those cabinet doors swing the other way...I know it's not as practical but at least the slide would push them closed.

Did the same exact thing on my unit. Second time home before second trip. Used glue and tooth picks jammed in the now larger screw holes. Re-drilled the holes and picked up some similar looking hinges at Lowe's.

Believe me, you are not.

Just don't try to drive away from the camping spot with the trailer foot still down

We just bought ours (used) and when we were looking at it, there was a cabinet door laying on the ground - we couldn't figure out why. Salesman says that someone must not have checked properly before hitting the slide ;-) Needless to say, it was a fix before we left the lot.

HAHA no doubt, wife and I think are on bonehead 103 or 104, luckily for us it's always been forgetting to pull the chocks and trying to figure out why the truck and trailer won't move for nothing lol.

My bonehead moment cost me $350, I'm leaving it at that.

Three trailers ago I came around the corner of my house and was watching the mirror to make sure I cleared. Forgot the awning and the gutter on house. Perfect match. Sliced the awning like a razor knife. Left next day for first trip out with new trailer and duct tape holding the awning together.

Pschaw! You people are amateurs, I have been camping for over 40 years. I think I invented bonehead moves. I must be on 1000 by now. If you ever feel like you did something stupid, YOU DID! Welcome to the family.

I have spent the time leveling the travel trailer, unhooking and pulling away. Than putting the slide out into a tree that was too close. Hook back, move TT over far enough to clear the tree with the slide. Level the trailer all over again. Time for shooters when you find you left the ice at home.

I have done this one myself.

I have a fix to make sure it does not happen again to me.

I cut a piece of PVC pipe about 3 inches longer then the slide when extended.

I run it along the edge of slide and make sure the end does not hit anything. Look up and make sure above is clear also.
