First time using furnace

I turned on the furnace for the first time. I read where you need to let the oils, etc. burn off the first time you use it. I turned it on and set off the smoke detetor. Is this a reasonable thing to expect?

I've heard of others say running the furnace the first time to open windows vent and door for the smells/fumes to clear out. So I guess it could set off the smoke detector. Mine gave off no smells no smoke or anything the first time we used it.

1x, yes. It took about a half-hour to burn off whatever they put on it the first time we used it. Fortunately it was in the driveway and the weather was nice. Haven't had any issues after the first time use.

Guess I got lucky. Never noticed any odd odors or set the smoke alarm off on our first use.

+1 for yes. Mine created quite the stink, but it was cold outside at the time, so I was able to open all the windows, vents & doors. I let it run 30-45 minutes, and it burned everything off. I've only used once since then though, so perhaps I need to run it again... probably in the winter though... Here in Texas, I don't see our furnace getting all that much use, especially since we keep a small space heater in the trailer.

I'm on my third Jayco and never had the furnace set off the smoke alarm the first time it was used. Cooking in the kitchen however has been another matter!
