Jay Feather 7 22MBH Baja Edition

Good evening everyone. Very excited to say that I just purchased a new 2017 Jay Feather 7 22MBH. Great floor plan for the family. We didn't necessarily set out looking for a lightweight trailer, but fell in love with this one.

It is equipped with the Baja edition package which is something that I haven't seen much of here locally. Does anyone else here have the Baja edition that can make any comments? I was originally a little concerned with the added hitch height, but I think it is a fair trade off for the larger wheels/tires and the additional ground clearance.

We will be taking delivery at the end of next week and simply can't wait.

Love the Baha option for closed underside, bigger tanks and higher clearance, the missing part was undersized battery, so the first upgrade for me was adding second battery. Another miss I think is that they used the same tong jack, which is too short for TV hookup, so be sure to always carry some piece of 4x4 to raise it.

Do you happen to know what your hitch height is at level? The spec sheet they provided me is showing 23" but I have a feeling it is higher than that.

Sounds about right, but you need to account for TV sag if you are trying to figure out the right hitch option, so it's better to try few option and settle after trying the actual trailer and TV combination.

The spec sheet we got with ours listed both the standard and the Baja dimensions. Our Baja hitch height was 8 1/8" higher than the standard at 26". If the spec sheet doesn't specifically identify as being for the Baja, or have both standard and Baja specs then it's probably just for the standard model.

Since our dealer is just a few miles away I was able to run by and take measurements ahead of time, but that may not be an option for you if the dealer is not close. Even so I had to make some additional adjustments after getting the unit home in order to properly account for my auto-leveling suspension as well as the loaded tongue weight once it was packed and ready to go.

The dealer is a little over an hour from me so it isn't as easy to stop by and take measurements as I would like it to be. I do have a B&W adjustable hitch that I'll probably pick it up with. There should be enough range there to get it home and I can set it up better before we take it out for the first time.

Call your salesman and put him to the task of getting you a level measurement, doesn't require much of his time. And most dealers will help to make sure your hitch is set up properly so you can have a safe journey home, you may have to tweak it later depending on how the trailer handles while pulling.

OK, so I learned a few things about this new trailer over the weekend.

First, when I decided to purchase this trailer, the spec sheet that the dealer gave me showed what I thought were 2500# axles contributing to the 5500# GVWR.

So, I come to find that this one actually has 3500# axles on it instead. I'm assuming that they are included with the Baja Package.

The other thing that we discovered isn't quite as pleasant but not really a big deal. The fridge that is part of the outside kitchen is mounted solid in the passenger side rear compartment. Someone in their wisdom, decided to place the level control on the back side of the fridge with no way to adjust the temp from the front or inside the fridge and no way to get your arm in around the fridge. The only way to access the control is through a very small trap door under the bottom bunk. The area is so small, I had to send one of my kids under there with a flashlight to reach in.

Very nice!

When you get around to weighing it for TW I'd love to know what it is running after all your stuff is in there.

If we ever decide to go to a larger TT it will likely be exactly what you have.

I will likely have it on the scale sometime in early June (there's a CAT scale approx 20 miles from me). I'll be happy to share the info with you.

Installed the Anderson hitch on it today.

I had to cut one length off of the chain and probably could stand to take one more off. It's in that in between stage where it needs one more off, but it will be very tight at that point and may cause hitching issues. I'm going to try it here and see what results I can get with it before I trim another link.

Even though it isn't my primary tow vehicle, I played around with it on my van today. With a very minimal amount of tension, I have the front wheel well height back to unloaded height and the rear is down 3/4". I actually didn't want to get the front quite that far back, but I'm going to leave it here and scale it.

I'm aware that it is nose down (actually less than an inch measured but the driveway slope makes it look worse than it is). I'll do some final adjustments once I can get it on level ground.....which is darn hard to find around here.

Bringing this thread back up for a few updates. This weekend marks our 20th night in this trailer since we picked it up. A few impressions so far.

- Tons of inside storage for such a small trailer. We have everything packed in here that came out of our former 26' non bunkhouse and we have room to spare.

- Placement of windows in this trailer is well thought out. Great airflow when they are open. We've stayed in here quite a few warm nights so far and haven't needed the AC much at all.

- Very limited external storage. Some if this is due to the outside kitchen taking up the passenger side rear compartment. But with that said, I have room for my levelers, hoses, etc. in the two front compartments. But, things that we used to carry in the trailer storage areas such as our folding chairs now have to live in the bed of the truck.

- The external kitchen is absolutely awesome. This is our first trailer with it and I can honestly say that I don't think we can go back to a trailer without one. There is nothing better than just being able to reach around behind you while sitting under the awning to reach your next lemonade or cook bacon without filling the trailer with the smell of grease.

- The trailer design is very well thought out with just a couple of exceptions. First, there isn't a power outlet in the kitchen area itself. There is one on the side of the bottom kitchen cabinet near the sink, but that means that anything plugged in has to reside at the edge of the counter. They have outlets everywhere else in this thing. Just one more in the kitchen area would be great. Secondly, another minor complaint is the location of the bathroom door and the bathroom vanity/sink. If someone is using the sink, you cant open the bathroom door without bumping in to them. Again, just something minor, but worth noting.
