Mexico water treatment

We are planning a trip to Puerto Penasco Mexico this winter. I would appreciate some advice on a water purification system that would keep my family safe without breaking the proverbial bank. I want something that I can hook up to the faucet so that I don’t contaminate the trailer side. Any suggestions?

To hook inline, only thing I saw was a UV light filter most where priced was $500+. But this amazon unit looks fairly affordable.

There are a few other options. You could go to a place like REI, Gander Mountain, Cabelas, etc. purchase was water filtration pump used for backpacking. There are a lot of good units out there. Many of them you can pump about a liter of water every minute. For cooking, just boil the water, length of time varies from study to study, but none every say for more then 5 minutes.

Another option, I have used backpacking is both Iodine and bleach. Iodine WILL leave a permanent stain! You can also use chlorine. Put water and chemical treatment in the FW tank and let it sit. I have not used Chlorine in 30 years, so I do not recall the ratio, and the taste is not good. But then the taste of Iodine is not much better.

As noted above, but I have never seen used at this volume/flow rate is UV. Water bottle scale, you insert a UV battery operated water filter, and let it sit in the bottle for about a minute to sterilize the water.

These are probably the best affordable options. If it was me, I would use a water pump. After the trip I would sanitize my FW system.

You did not mention how long the trip would be.

For drinking water a gravity fed backpacking water filter would be adequate for your needs

Avoid the pump ones . They are great for their use but they are a bit more work and limited in output.

The UV ones like Steripen need clear water to work.. any particulate matter and they don't do their job.. They would need a prefilter.

For traveling safely in Mexico the last thing you should worry about is the water.

Slim PotatoHead on YouTube went there last year you might want to check it out it could answer a few questions. I don't think he stayed long enough to worry about water.
