Nhtsb/jayco recall notice now posted

On the NHTSB list, the Swift SLX has recall notice on all SLX manufactured Oct 24, 2011 through July 3, 2012
JAYCO will notify owners by mail. This is a axle recall. Recall is expected to begin this month. Info on the NHTSB WEBSITE

Has anyone received a notice of this recall yet? This is annoying to say the least. We were planning on taking the camper on another 400 mile trip next weekend, now I am questioning whether I should. We have put about 800 miles on our 184Bh and it was manufactured in 5/2012. The recall on the NHTSB says that the wheel bearings are too large which causes overheating. I have checked the temperature of my bearings each time I have stopped on our longer trips and they were barely even warm to the touch. Is anyone else changing your plans now that you know there is an issue? I probably don't have an issue with mine, but, I don't feel like it is worth the risk now.

Just had ours replaced and still having issues, it's been an on going problem, over 2 months now. With ours, I could jack up the tt and wiggle the tires from side to side. you might try that, I would think that tires that were tight and you could not wiggle would be a good sign. Good luck....happy camping!

dlindsay001 You could jack it up and check( grab the tire's at the 12 & 6 o'clock positions and wiggle then the 3&9 o'clock positions) your self or just go to your local garage and have them check. No sense ruinning vacation plans. ps you would have found the problem within that 800 miles if you had one. Larry

I just called the dealer about this and they have not been notified yet and don't know about the recall. I am going to jack it up and see if I notice any play and go from there I guess.

I'm procrasting the dealer call, hoping they'll get the notice first. Where are you guys finding your manufacture date? I found an April 2012 on outside of camper, is that it? I'm pretty sure we have a problem . When we took it for first camping trip (a 20 min trip) both wheels were HOT. Thot we had the brake controller too tight. Backed off on that, and the wheels cooled enough so we could leave our hands on and not get a 3rd degree burn! Still think there's a problem, so better get it in.

Yes, the mfg date is on the side. I just jacked it up, no noticeable wobble, possibly a tiny amount of play but not sure. I called jayco, they referred me to Dexter axle and gave me the name of the woman handling the recall. I left her a message to call me as she is supposed to have an idea which serial numbers of axles are being recalled.

I hope everyone gets taken care of on this one -and soon. Loose bearings with possible loss of a hub and wheel, and especially on a single axle trailer, is not a good scenario.

Had bearings replaced and still have play in the wheels, can wiggle them slightly, dealer says they are within specs, my mechanic says no, I have e mailed Dexter for their opinion but have not yet received an answer.. will update when I have an answer, this is a real bummer, we bought a new tt so we would not have a lot a mechanical issues, I guess the joke is on us, but we are not laughing anymore........happy camping!

Russell - I can't remember her name, I called the dexter axle phone number on their website and was transferred to her. Haven't heard back yet. Good luck.

I spoke to Dexter Axle today. I was given lot numbers of the axles that are going to be recalled. They are 129730674, 129743994, 129749447, 129774623. This number is stamped on the back side of the axle. I just went and looked at my axle and it is not one of the recalled axles!!!!! I hope this helps relieve some anxiety for those of you with SLX's. I am going to go ahead with our trip this weekend.

I'm good X2. Jayco told me I was clear and the info above does also. However, my numbers aren't stamped but they are on a sticker w/date, Jayco , and the lot numbers.
Anyways, I feel some relief.

I'm still trying to get mine sorted out. Jayco seems to be pushing this issue off on Dexter Axle. If you call Jayco they will need to trailer's Serial #, not the VIN #. It only takes them a minute a they can tell you the exact manufacture date. Of course mine was built 6 days prior to the recall start date. Lucky me. Jayco still says I may have one of the bad axles and should have my trailer inspected for it. The trouble I'm now having is that my dealer says they can't do warranty work without me recvg. a recall letter from Jayco. I won't be getting one because of the manufacture date of my trailer. I sent a copy of the Jayco email telling me to get it checked and am waiting for their reply.

The easiest thing to do is to check on the axle itself for a sticker. Copy all of the #s off the sticker or look on the axle for the stamped serial #. Email the numbers to Dexter Axle and they will let you know pretty quickly if your axle is part of the group involved in the recall.
