Picking up the first ever TT - Need Advice

Hello,

We will be picking up our first ever travel trailer tomorrow... YAY
Since this will be our first TT, dealer scheduled 3 hours demo to show us everything about of how things work with the trailer etc.

We are absolutely new to trailers and I thought I would ask more experienced people for advice...
The trailer is brand new, it will come with extended warranty and extra protection plan, BUT I wanted to ask if there is anything in particular I should pay attention to or ask for when I go to pick it up?
Just in case it matters, it is 2013 JayFeather Ultra LIght model 16V.

Any pointers and/or ideas much appreciated.

Chris

Not sure where you are located but at this point in the year, I would have them cover winterization.

Also make sure to test everything with them. Run appliances in all modes (gas/electric). My refrigerator wasn't working on electric when I got my trailer. After a bit of sniffing around I found it wasn't plugged in. No big deal but it means the dealer didn't test it before I did.

There is a lot of good info on this site and YouTube about the ways to do things like hooking up and flushing / cleaning tanks, but it is always good to hear what they say.

Also have them cover hitching, towing and overall safety.

as BrettSLC mentioned, try to test everything, when we and my friend pick up our trailers, My Friends fridge propane indicator does not work. even though they suppose to do the initial inspection they have missed it. there's few things that was missed too.

try also to record the walk through, there's a lot of things to absord in the first day LOL and mostly will be forgotten after the walk through but there's a lot of youtube walk through for refresher

enjoy your RV

Take notes and/or video it.

Cancel the extended warranty.

If that's a new Jayco, pretty much everything is covered under warranty for two years. If you buy an extended warranty now and finance that into the cost, you are paying 2 years of interest on that warranty for nothing. Personally, I dislike extended warranties because dealers aren't always straight forward with the cost, warranty companies like to find ways out of not paying for coverage, there is usually a deductible, and some warranty companies have been known to go out of business leaving you with no coverage.

X2 ^. Most eveything bought new (of value) typically has its own warranty as it is. With that said if something is going to fail its typically within the first few times of extended use and should be covered under the normal warranty period. You really need to get the dealer to go over the warranty and whats expected of the consumer as far as sealants and treatments and what they will cover (typically a very short period after you pull it off the lot). Water damage is the #1 killer of TTs......again...water damage is the #1 killer of TTs. I agree with this being your first TT if possible video the walk through as theres tons of stuff they demonstrate and easy to forget most of it.

What they said.............
I just had my first, and only, warranty repair done. It was two months after the 2 year factory warranty expired, and Jayco still honoured it.
I just think that extended warranties are a cash grab.

I am east of Toronto.

I wintarized the trailer today.

Agree with the above - video it if you can. We bought our first TT last month and had our first trip that month and got to the campsite with no idea how to turn on the water heater! There was way too much to remember. Winterization steps? It was Aug - that went in one ear and out the other. But there's a lot of help here if you don't catch it all.

Re: Picking up the first ever TT - Need Advice

Thank you guys so much... I just brought it home....
Like i mentioned before i have never towed anything in my life, so drive home was a bit stressful not to mention the backing up onto the driveway...
I need to practice that for sure...
As for the warranty I guess because it is our first trailer ever we absolutely have no idea what to expect that's why we have decided to go for that ext warranty.

I wanted to attach a picture but looks like i don't have permission

Anyway we are super excited and looking forward to our first trip in a week.

Congratulations!!! It is so exciting to get your first TT. I would recommend going to a CG within a short distance from the house. This way you are able to make quick runs back to the house for the forgotten cork screw, spatula, TP, etc.....

I recommend a head lamp be kept in your ward robe. You'll be the one setting up in the dark on the late arrivals and you'll need yours, versus the one's the kids have removed the batteries from or lost. I recommend keeping a small size hand sanitizer with your sewer gear. Single axle, I recommend wheel chocks for both sides of each wheel along with a set of plywood or lego style plastic tiles to help level with. I recommend you get used to a routine of setting those wheel chocks prior to hiking the tongue and disconnecting from your TV.

That's as many mistakes I've made as I can think of right now. You'll earn your own stripes but that's half the fun! Enjoy!

yep, keep the flashlight, power cable extension, and crank (if req) handy. Learned that the hard way last summer when arriving at the CG after dark.
