Tongue weight and Waste tanks 166FBS

In case somebody can't tell from my other posts, I like to experiment. I came home yesterday from 5 days on the road with Black tank reading 1/3 and Grey reading 2/3, flickering on Full. I have a few gallons in the fresh tank, but way too low to read on the gauges.

I have a tongue scale, so I put that under; 620 lbs. Emptied the black and flushed it, then fully drained; the tongue weight was 660 lbs.

Emptied the Grey, and the weight was...660 lbs.

Not really unexpected; the diagram from Jayco below shows the tank locations BWT/GWT/FWT and the GWT is almost centered over the axle.

The tongue weights for all trailers (at least from what I have seen) is with the trailer empty and dry. Propane tanks may be there but are empty. So yep the 30lb tanks would roughly add 60lb, battery weight (for LA ~60lbs), and then yes some of the fresh water weight and anything in the front storage on the 166 would also be included in that weight.

The best thing to do is go to a CAT scale. We did that on a recent trip and it was interesting to take the weights with and without the WDH. For us the "extra" weight added to the truck is roughly 150lbs. But it also forces to the trailer axle as well so you have to be careful.

Just curious......, at your CAT visit with your 166FBS under your loaded conditions what was your gross loaded weight and loaded tongue weight?

I'm still fine tuning mine. I made the mistake of setting up the Andersen before much of anything was loaded. Empty bed in the pickup, didn't have any batteries at all, hadn't put in the heavier mattress, etc. etc. I will redo the setup loaded before the next trip.

There are no CAT scales within 300 miles to my south, and an infinite number of miles to my north. 150 miles East, but not likely to head East until it cools down considerably. However, as many here know, Oregon leaves its scales on and usable by anyone when the scales are closed. Northbound to Brookings last Monday, with a half tank of gas and a lot of tools etc. in the truck, these were my axle weights:

Front 3000
Rear 3400
Trailer 4100 Tongue would have been between 650 and 700

On Thursday I drove down with nearly a full tank of gas but no trailer (not practical to get into these particular scales when traveling the opposite direction) and these were my numbers:

Front 3200
Rear 2650

The GAWRs are:

Front 3375
Rear 3350
Trailer 4400 axle; 4995 Gross

From this it is clear that I'm not overweight on gross for either truck or trailer, but I have (had) way too much weight shifted front to rear on the truck. Again, not surprising as the WDH adjustment was made in "not real" conditions. I'm a newbie, what can I say?

I will be heading north again before the end of the month, and will cross the same scales (I've never seen them open in 20+years) and possibly another to double-check the numbers.

Unfortunately I am not 100% sure about the tongue weight part of the question as I would have needed to do 3 weights not the two that I did. I was more trying to figure out how much my WDH was distributing on the suspension/trailer when in use.

The truck does not "squat" much (well no more than any RAM as the coils are softer than leaf springs). But to get the tongue weight I would have to weigh the truck on its own and I didnt want to unhitch.

With that being said the weights that Don mentions for the are the same on mine (Trailer 4400 axle; 4995 Gross)

When we weighed the trailer it was loaded for travel, so was our truck, including the DW and myself. We were on day three of our 2 1/2 month (10,000 mile) trip. The trailer had 10ish gal in the black tank, a little in the grey and about 3/4 full in the fresh tank. I had one full propane 30lb tank, and the other was about 2/3-1/3 full. I have four 100ah LiFePO4 batteries that are in the passthrough (not on the tongue), total about 100lbs. Honda generator and blocks for stabilizers etc in the area where the outdoor fridge would be.

First weigh: with wdh on
Front axle - 3480 (160lb added due to WDH)
Rear axle - 3760 (280lb less due to WDH)
Trailer axle - 4780 (100lb added due to WDH)
Total gross weight 12020 (20lb less? no clue where it went)

Second weigh: no wdh on
Front axle - 3320 (160lb less than with WDH)
Rear axle - 4040 (280lb more than with WDH)
Trailer axle - 4680 (100lb less than with WDH) (not sure where the other 20lbs went? but that is also the dif on the gross weight)
Total gross weight 12040 (I guess I weight more this time around?, shows these scales are not 100% perfect)

But with the WDH on we did remove 280 lbs from the rear axle and distribute it between the trailer and the front axle on the truck.

My trucks max gross (GCWR) is not to exceed 13900 so we are really good there.
The axles are rated (GAWR) for, Front - 3900 and Rear - 4100, so we are good there in either setup.
The max gross as mentioned of the trailer is 4995, so we are good there even with the WDH.

I just don't have a solid answer for tongue weight. I will say the trailer tows fine either way, however I would not tow long distance without the WDH. That however is mostly for sway control and we did hit some VERY strong winds on our trip, didn't get moved around at all (well no more than the truck would have anyway, seeing other vehicles on the road doing the same). For reference we have the E2 6000lb with square tube bars.

If you should confirm your 166RBS 'loaded tongue weight' feel free to post it in the JOF thread titled....... "What's Your "Scaled" Tongue/Pin Weight?" (link below).

Thanks in advance...
