Towing capacity with a 2018 Ford150

Hello all,l have a question for you. My wife and I are retiring at the first of the year. We will be buying a 2018 Ford150 Platium and a 2018 Jayco Jayfeather 22fqsw. I was told by the dealer they are changing the name to 22RK with updates.

My question is the towing capacity of the truck. In 2108, Ford increased the towing capacity from 12,000 to 13,200. The truck will have the 3.5 Ecoboost V6 with the 10 speed transmission. The trailer will weigh between 4300 to 4500 pounds and the tongue weight is 385.

Would I have any issue's towing this trailer up hills and step pass's?

Thank you for your response's.

Ken

You will not have any issues towing that trailer with that truck. The 3.5 ECO is an amazing engine and when paired with the 10 speed it gets even better...

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on retiring, the trailer and the truck.

Questions like this come up frequently on this forum. The issue most often comes down to the PAYLOAD of your truck (printed on the sticker on the drivers-side door jam) and all the people, dogs, and stuff in your truck cab and truck bed, plus the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer (to estimate tongue weight, take 15% of your trailer's gross weight).

Most often it is the vehicle PAYLOAD that is a tow vehicle's towing limitation. As far as I know, no one knows how vehicle manufacturers arrive at the 'towing capacity'.

Hello,

I purchased a 2016 Ford F150 to tow a travel trailer and to drive around as a second vehicle with the 3.5 eccoboost and max tow package. It has been great for towing my little Jay Flight SLX 175RD (3200 lbs) up and down some of the mountain ranges. Recently did Dead Mans Pass between Pendleton and LaGrande, OR.

If you decide to stay with a F150 rather than getting a F250 (for the bigger payload, beefier suspension, larger brakes) than I wish I had made sure that besides the max tow package I had also gotten the max payload package and the extended tow mirrors. I find myself bumping close to the front axle GAWR on my F150 (3400 lbs).

Tundra CrewMax 5.7. Rated at 10,400 and ball weight of 1,395. My WH 24RKS is 6,400 loaded and my Tundra does fine. Would I like a 3/4 ton? Sure but all good 👍

I would not expect any issues with that combination of truck/trailer.
Make sure you look at and understand the various towing packages and axle ratio ratings.
Also, look at some similarly equipped trucks on the dealer lot and see what their door sticker says for payload.

F150 towing

2 months ago I took delivery on a 2017 F150 Lariat with the max tow package, and a month ago we got a 2017 Jayco Eagle 27.5RLTS 5th wheel. We have it loaded to about 8500-9000 pounds. Last week we traveled to the NorCal coast and on one of the narrow 2-lane roads with climbs we had some turns with a posted speed of 15mph-very tight and steep uphill. We had plenty of power with the 10 speed EcoBoost, and were able to accelerate out of those turns even while going up sections of 10% grade. With 10 "gears" you can easily change to appropriate lower gears to reduce your braking needs.

We *really* like the adaptive cruise control that you'll also get on the Platinum. On the freeway I set the speed at 55, and the space between us and the vehicle and front, and the speed while towing is held +/- 1mph unless a car slows down into the space, and then our speed will slow too. Then it will speed up when the gap gets bigger. If a car enters the lane in front of me the truck won't always slow if the car in front of us is moving faster ahead of us (not a threat). Even with traffic around me I rarely have to touch the gas or brake on a freeway.

Purchased a 16 F150 3.6 ECO and tow a 19' Jayco Jayfeather loaded is close to 4000# The truck/engine combo is an amazing piece of equipment. Tows like its not even there and the average MPG is right at 12. I have to say that before I bought it I was skeptical about that engine combo but with the ECO its a towing machine.

I have an X213 Jayfeather and my ‘15 F150 Platinum with maxtow (3.5 ecoboost) has no problem. I agree with the tow mirrors they are really nice to have.

It does drink allot when towing especially on boost but then again it can pull more than the V8.

The new diesel motor may be another option but not sure when it will be out.

Enjoy whatever you get!

Hi Warren,
I am considering buying the 27.5rlts. I also have to buy a tow vehicle and was wondering if you are still happy with how the F150 tows the 27.5rlts ?
Thanks,
Dan

Welcome to the Forum,

If you provide some additional details on your F150, such as trim level, supercab/supercrew and whether you have a Maxtow or Heavy Duty Payload Package and the motor and the rear differential (3.73/3.55/3.31) and your payload (yellow sticker on door) it may assist other forum members to give you more useful guidance. Not all F150's have the same capabilities and capacities which can have a major impact on the towing experience.

During our longest trip so far, we towed that trailer 5k miles from NorCal to Big Bend, TX, and back, and the F150 never had any problems with the tow. We have the Max Tow package. In this configuration the truck can handle 15% grades with no problem, and can accelerate during ~10% grades. We averaged 11 mpg. We have a Lariat-love it. So far we've spent about 60 nights in this trailer and we're very satisfied with it (after I've made some additions).

Curious, what is your axle rating? What is your GVWR and what type of tires do you have? GCWR?

Also curious. We previously had the same F150 which we traded. The pin weight alone on our 28.5 HT maxed out our payload which left no room for passengers or extras in the truck.

Very happy it is working for you.

Unless you have the Heavy Duty Payload Package (HDPP) I don't think there is a newer 5th wheel from Jayco that you can tow with the F150.

Most, if not all of the HT series 5th wheels require you to have a payload of around 2300lbs or more. There aren't too many F150s out there with that kind of Payload.

2017 Payload is rather impressive:

I'm sure the 2018 is close if not improved.

EDIT: Here's the 2018 Brochure:

Key is "if properly equipped" Be interesting to find out what the minimum capacity is, now that we know the max. These ads can be pretty misleading, like many

My understanding is 2018 had a range of 1435 to 2300lbs depending how the truck is equipped.
