Trouble Unhitching

I bought a used '05 Jayco Featherlite 23B and have had a lot of trouble unhitching. The hitch doesn't seem to want to come loose from the ball. Eventually, I unhooked the tow bar from my tow package and drove off then the ball dropped right of out of the hitch. Can anyone advise what I am doing wrong?

If you are parking on an incline or decline it good be binding up. Make sure the hitch is clean of rust and is well lubed.

lx22f/c....thank-you for your response. I am on an incline. I will try lubing the hitch mechanism tomorrow.

I find stepping on the bumper will release the ball from the hitch when its stuck. The ball is sitting in there like a socket. To far forward or backward and it gets hung up.

That always happens on inclines/declines. Just keep it well lubed.

If it moves, grease it. If it doesn't move, paint it.

Same problem here. Its get easier with use. It took pretty much our entire first season with the X20E for the moving parts in the tongue to loosen up.

I have struggled with this, at least until the ball and socket became well used to each other. Lube helps, as does anything that removes front-to-back or side-to-side forces from the connection. I've found that keeping the ball and socket clean also helps; I know clean and re-lube ball and socket before each trip.

If it's painted, turn it over and paint the other side.

+1 on lube. That fixes most of my hitch problems in short order.

My driveway is on a decline. I find that it helps to keep adjusting the chocks as the trailer will actually pull itself forward when the tongue goes up. By doing this you'll have a clean uncoupling and you won't have a lurch backwards when the hitch disengages.

Here is how I unhitch. I chock the trailer wheels and use the power hitch jack to raise the TV enough so that I can take the pressure off the equalizer hitch bars (chains). But I don't unhook them, I put the chains in the last link giving them plenty of free play. Then I lower the TV until there is no pressure on the trailer hitch. I pull the pin which keeps the ball hitch connected to the TV and drive out leaving everything intact including leaving the equalizer hitch still attached to the ball. Really simple and fast. I leave the equalizer hitch locked to the ball and attached to the trailer until I need to hook up again.

My dealer told me that the hitch should be adjusted so that the ball tilts back just a little, in other words not perfectly perpendicular to the ground. This seems to have eliminated the "stuck ball" problem on my x17z.

I use general purpose marine grease. It sticks and stays in place very well and lasts a long time.
