I was helping a friend convert this area called the bike storage area to a office area for him. This was in a 2010 X213 trailer...
The 12-inch wide area shown here is pretty much open area inside it. There is a small door access on both ends as I recall... The area above the area up to the ceiling I suppose would have the insulation you are referring too... I think we found storage of long hoses in this area thru the small outside door.
My friend went inside the large door area for 20-inches or so and put up a wall across the area. This made a pretty large area for him to install a L shaped desk with a hutch accessible from inside the trailer...

It was a success for him to setup an office area as he had no need for the bunk beds. Just him and his wife camping...
