Does anyone know if my propane regulator with automatically switch when one tank runs low or empty to the full tank? Also how do you know which tank is primary?

Look in your owners package of manuals, mine had one for the regulator, it should answer all your questions.

Yes it does. If both tanks re open it will switch over. Look at the the regulator, the lever is pointing at the original service tank. If the bubble show red your service tank is empty. Switch the lever to the other tank. It should now show a green color. Pull the original al tank and go get it filled. Replace the tank and open the valve. That’s it.
