21 cu ft residential fridge question

Debating whether to take the included 21 cu ft residential fridge or swap it out for the smaller 18 cu ft gas/elec fridge. For those that have the 21 cu ft fridge in their unit can you share with me the ah the fridge draws when travelling or boondocking. I am planning to install a robust solar power system rather than a genset and would like to know if it is feasible to power the residential size fridge for say 12-24 hours.

That can be a variable since JAYCO does switch brands from time to time. We had SAMSUNG, others have FRIGIDAIRE or WHIRLPOOL. Many seem to agree that the biggest load is when the fridge goes into defrost. Our SAMSUNG was only 3.7 amps, but they use an inverter compressor which is dc. Hope you get some with solar to jump in.

I have the Frigidaire residential and 520watts of solar.
I used to have 2 Trojan t105 batteries (220ah) and it was a struggle.
Last year I installed 4 Rolls 6v at 470ah and I can go pretty much full time if there is full sun everyday. I did 4 days with running 2 roof vents, tv and PlayStation for almost all day every day, levelling the trailer, 3 slides in and out, and lifting the trailer back on the truck. But again, I had full sun over head everyday.
I also made a defrost delete for my Fridgidaire that won’t let it go into defrost mode. Defrost mode uses 45amps for 20mins and it goes into defrost often.
The fridge running normally for the most part runs at 4amps. It will go to 10-12 amps for a while. If it’s hot out it will never shut off.
Open the fridge door and it adds another 10amps.

The 21 cf fridge should be the Whirlpool side by side, at least ours is. The model number is WRS571CIHZ. You may be able find some technical info based on the model number. Good luck.

My 17 Northpoint 375 has the Fridgidare 21cuft. I got a pair of 6v Interstate batteries wired in series and I'd bet I could go for a few days without charging them. I've had it run on batteries going down the road, and they are not connected to the truck charging, for 4 hours and my display panel said I was at like 94% if I remember correctly.

We have the Whirlpool side by side, and have been at almost full capacity on the batteries after 13 hours on the road. We’re running 4 6V batteries. With a good solar system and batteries you shouldn’t have any issues.

As an aside, after having a residential fridge, we will never go back to the gas/electric - it’s just too hard to properly regulate.

Many thanks to all!

Thank you all for your most helpful comments/advice. I have gone ahead and ordered the 21 cu ft residential fridge but don’t yet know the model being installed. I have also decided to swap out the 1500 watt inverter for a beefed up 3000 watt one and together with an enhanced charge controller and at least two 100 ah lithium batteries I feel that I will be off to a good start. Once I take delivery of my unit in September I will have to monitor the behavior of the system to determine what if any further adjustments would be warranted. Unfortunately with this Covid pandemic affecting us all I fear it will be some time before I can safely travel south to warmer and sunnier climes where I will really be able to test out the solar system.

Thanks again.
