Exclamation 30 amp shore power plug

I remember seeing a thread on this subject, but can't find it. I have a Eagle 322FKS with 15m a/c and all the standard appliances. I have noticed the 30 amp plug gets hot and the "hot" side" of the plug appears to be burnt. I now run the refg. & water heater on gas when we are using the a/c. However if I use my 30 amp extension cord, only the plug on the Jayco gets hot the plug on the 30 amp extension cord is warm but not hot. I noticed the cord on my Jayco was made in China! Has anyone else experienced this, and if so how did you solve the problem.

On my last 30a rig, I had to cut the plug off and replace it with a new one. Sometimes the wiring at the plug heats up and destroys the plug due to poor connection at the CG panel or breakdown of the wires due to frequent flexing.

I would get an aftermarket 30a plug and replace the one on your supply cord.

I've got the same TT and have not had that problem. I did have the plug seperate and replaced the whole pigtail. Got it off Ebay at a good price. I'll post if if I can find it.

I had a similar issue a few years ago.

I cut off the existing 30A male plug and replaced it with a Camco 30-Amp Power Grip Plug.

"hot" & "burnt", those are bad words when talking about electricity. Replace, replace and replace!

Agreed ^. I have see this a few time with extension cord ends (yard work, home use etc) and just cut off the end and install a new one. Make sure you inspect the bare wires when stripping them back. Sometimes the wires turn black which can add to the resistance of the wire (generate heat) or cause a poor connection at the new end. just cut back till its shiny copper.

Assuming that you have not converted your shore power to a twist-lock plug, replacing the end should take care of you. Along with stripping the jacket back to expose shiney wire, verify hat the cord has been constructed with 10ga wire. I had a marine customer with an overheating shore power cord and we discovered that the cord had been made with 14ga wire. It seldom happens, but it doesn't hurt to verify it. Also, insure the pedestal breaker is off when you plug in at the CG.

I have the 28BHS. If I replace my plug end with the Power Grip Plug will it still store (fit) in the same place?

Most likely, it will not, but now you have reason to convert it to a detachable cord so you don't have to wrestle a cold power cord bck through the mouse hole.

Here is the Thread where I did replace the cord on my 322FKS. It works great and was a great price. The cost was $36.00 and was from Ebay and the link is in the last post of the thread.

I don't understand the advantage of the detachable cord, unless you dry camp. I don't have any problem slipping the power cord back through the "mouse hole". A few times a year I spray a rag with silicone and wipe the cord as I put it away. The cord slides right in.

The 30a cord is not to bad, the 50a however is tough in cold weather.

I agree, it's not a problem with a 30 amp cord.

50 amp would be a different story.

Last spring our 50 amp cord was so stiff I couldn't roll it up. I ended up just throwing it in the back of the truck. I now have a 50 to 30 adapter and will buy a 30 amp cord for our journey back to North Idaho next week or so.

The 50 amp cord is hard to wrestle with whether it hot or cold.

I replaced the electrical cord on my Jayco TT immediately with the Marinco twist lock plug. My Jayco TT has an aluminum skin so I made a round aluminum plate that the Marinco socket mounts on. I sure wish Jayco would offer it as an option on their TTs.

No more trying to pull out that 30 ft cord or trying to push it back in during colder weather.

If for no other reason that what you stated the Marinco plug is a good reason.
"Mouse Hole" Anyone that has been aboard ship knows why they have rat guards on the shore lines of ships. In a TT the mice can run right up that cord into your RV and starting eating all the good electrical stuff. Mice love to chew on those wire inside that mouse hole.

It's not the stuffing the cord in the hole thats the problem. It's trying to pull it back out when there is a huge knot in it. Mine got knotted up once and the shore power plug was installed before the next outing. Best $75 I ever spent, and it looks sweet as heck.

I did the conversion as it is one less place a mouse can use to crawl into the rig. besides it was a PIA pushing that cord through the hole.. (on those few times I was in a campground)

I've never had my 30 amp cord knot up. If I did, it is easy to access the cord storage area from under the bunk bed.
