30amp surge protector

A couple weeks ago we pulled into a State Park with our 2009 JayFlight G2 32' BHDS and I plugged in the surge protector and had all Green lights, as usual. Then I plugged the trailer into the surge protector and the top left light turned "sorta" red more orange than red. By that I mean it was green with a tint of red showing. This light means I could have reversed polarity. I finished setting up and went to the ranger station and asked if I could have someone please take a look at our power post. Of course on a Sunday evening no one with any knowledge was available. I left the camper pluged in and waited until Monday mid morning when maintenance showed up and checked the outlet. Everything tested correct. I didn't think about it the rest of our trip until it was time to pull the plug and pull out. The surge protector and my camper plug were melted together slightly and all the prongs were tinted red.. I was planning on replacing my trailer cord with a shorepower unit anyways but now I have to replace the surge protector as well. Has this happened to anyone else or anyone have any ideas what may have happened. Thanks in Advance.

Do you recall if the plug fit snugly into the outlet on the power pole? One thing that I've noticed is that many of the 30amp outlets are rather "worn" and the plugs fit loosely. Loose fitting plugs can arc and generate heat. If the power pole provides a 50amp outlet I will use that with the 50-30amp dog bone rather than a poor-fitting 30amp.

I once had something similar - while breaking camp my Progressive Industries male plug (going to the pedestal) was melted and the "hot lead" pulled out of the rubberized plug.

The problem was in the pedestal - yet Progressive Industries fixed it; FREE (minus shipping).

The one I have would not let reverse polarity through.. I would suggest not wasting money on "cheap" ones and get a good one.. Yes you will pay $200+for it but it is well worth it.
