I just went thru the manual. Can't believe they give you a 7 band EQ for the audio but no backlight control. Looks like the Energy Saving setting in the Initial Setup menu would be the way to go when boondocking.

See page 23, brightness setting in picture setting will darken the picture.

Right, but the question was about how to reduce the backlight level. This is a control that many LCD florescent lit TVs have. The control reduces the power going to each florescent tube and reduces the amount of light; it has somewhat the effect of reducing the brightness level, but an added benefit of reducing the electricity that the TV uses and allowing the florescent tubes to last longer.
