50 AMP Problem - Trips Breaker upon Plugging In

Just got our new Jayco 5er and encountered a problem. Hope someone can help???

Wired a new 50 AMP circuit from our home service panel.
Electrician tested the circuit at the a) breaker box; b) receptacle and c) end of the power cord. Everything appeared to be OK as there was 110 from both legs and the neutral and 240 across both power legs.

Problem: As soon as I tried to connect the power cord to the 5er, it tripped the 50 AMP breaker.

What have we missed? Any guidance would be appreciated!!

Assuming the trailer has worked properly before this incident the most obvious answer is the outlet you had installed is not wired correctly. Plus if that is the case damage may have been done to the camper as well.

I would plug it into a 20a source using adapters and see if the trailer power works using a different source,

Or you could get a different electrician.

Hopefully your electrician wired your RV50AMP connection correctly. The RV 50AMP wiring is "NOT" like standard house 50AMP wiring. Wiring them up wrong usually results in several applicances fried in your trailer... Always use a bonded electrician so he can bear the cost of the replacement items that got burned up for being wired up wrong.

This is the testing procedure for the 50AMP and 30/20/15AMP setup per google search.

50AMP

30AMP & 15/20AMP

Hoping for the best for you..... Lots of expensive horror stories on here about being wired up wrong... A friend of a friend of a friend electrician is usually disastrous... Its not they don't know what they are doing, it is just the electricians are NOT expecting the RV trailers to be wired differently than a standard house circuit.

Just my thoughts

It's good to see that Mike Sokol's No Shock Zone information and diagrams are getting around. He's been doing some great work and research.

His site is worth visiting for all RV owners.

FYI.......Wanted to advise the root cause of the problem. When the floor was installed, they pinched a wire going into the 5er fuse box. The Technician at Roy's RV did a great job at isolating and reconnecting the wires to a junction box. The wiring at my house was spot on as everything is working normally. Thanks to those that replied.

Great news. When I picked up my new rig it was plugged in as the dealer went over all the systems. The problem you had IMO should have been discovered before you took possession.

If you are happy then lets go camping!

Roy,
Just trying to get the correct understanding of how a 50amp plug for an RV outlet is different than wiring a 50amp outlet for an electric stove.

The diagram you show for a 50amp outlet looks like the same I am familiar with for house wiring an electric range outlet?

What am I missing?

Best regards,
Doug

For the record, the 5er was plugged into 2 separate 30 amps that were converted into the 50 amp at the Dealer. We did the inspection of every 110 volt option with no problems. The fixing Technician stated that it is something that can happen when you tow a house. No one to blame....it just can and did happen.

That explanation would not give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the problem but I am glad you got it fixed.
