A GPS Designed For RVers

http://blog.rv.net/2011/05/a-gps-des...pdates+Feed%29

After extensive research and beta testing in the RVing community, Rand McNally has released the TripMaker® RVND™ 5510 sporting a name that’s almost as long as my motorhome. It’s the first navigation device designed specifically for RVers.
It comes stocked with information that would make a car driver’s head spin. Routing isn’t just routing on the 5510. The GPS also includes height and weight restrictions and turning preferences that are tuned to the type of RV you’re driving. For example, you might not enjoy maneuvering your 43-foot-long motor home around a tight right corner into the Cracker Barrel parking lot. The 5510 will show you a left turn into your destination.
There’s also the question of where to park your house-on-wheels. The points of interest on this GPS are expanded to include RV campgrounds, dealers, repair providers, and travel centers with dump stations.
“We’ve listened carefully to members of the RVing community, who told us overwhelmingly that they would be interested in purchasing a GPS if it provided RV-specific routing, stops, and amenities that RVers need while on the road, and things to see and do along the way. Our new TripMaker® RVND™ line will solidly deliver on these expectations,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally in a new release.
RV-critical Information
Fully operational in English, French, and Spanish, the TripMaker® RVND™ features more than 14 million points of interest—including festivals, and national, state, and regional parks, and other Rand McNally researched locations. Other key information includes:
 RV campgrounds, RV dealers and service, parking, and rest areas, travel centers with detailed amenities such as dump stations, propane availability, and more
 Detailed exit information and available amenities on upcoming interstate exits
 RVer tools such as checklists for set up and take down, maintenance logs, trails back to your campsite, and quick mileage calculations
 Pet friendly locations including parks, animal hospitals, and beaches
 Extra content downloadable with a PC and internet connection via the RVND™ Dock
 Real-time traffic ready; requires additional accessory

The routing includes:
 Legal (including propane and other RV-only)
 Height and weight restrictions
 Quick reference to the Rand McNally Road Atlas
 Turn-by-turn spoken and text directions keep the driver focused on the road ahead
 Safe routing of larger vehicles with eleven RV classes

That looks amazing, but it doesn't say if it covers Canada.

Thumbs up

The 5510 is 5" screen.. They have a 7710 coming out in Oct 2011 with a 7" HD screen. I am waiting for that one.

Rand McNally and Woodall’s are partnering to include Woodall’s campground data in Rand McNally’s TripMaker RVND GPS units for RVers.

According to a press release, the data will be pre-loaded in devices shipping mid-April, and also will be available to current owners of TripMaker RVND devices – both the 5-inch and 7-inch models – via a free download early in the second quarter.

Rand McNally said it will be reaching out to existing owners to ensure that they are able to download the new content.

“Woodall’s is North America’s leading source of campground information for RVers and campers. We are very pleased to offer this very valued content as part of our industry-leading RV GPS devices,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally.

Highlights of the Woodall’s Campground data include:

• Listings for more than 12,000 RV parks and campground locations, with amenities.

• Family-friendly campgrounds and pets-allowed locations.

• “Big Rig” parks.

• “Green parks.”

• Site information such as extended stay sites available, typical site width and pull-through information.

• Services such as fees, escort to site, dumping.

• Essential information about seasonality and rates.

The data also includes the proprietary “5-W” ratings, which reflect the views of unbiased inspectors who visit and rate every possible private campground each year.

I recently got the 5510, and yes it covers Canada (maps and POI). We gave it a test run 2 weeks ago on a 200 mile round trip to the Hamilton RV show. We were driving the car, but had the 5510 in RV mode configured for our RV. So far, we really like this GPS.

Here is a way to save some money on buying almost the same thing, but only better. For less than the price of tax on this. Buy the GPS Co-pilot app if you have an iPad. Probably also avaible for other tablets. It has the RV function. Trip planning and everything including live traffic. I got the premium hd version on sale for 15 dollars. TEN INCH SCREEN!

Both of our iPads, 1&2, are wi-fi so no help for us when we are traveling.

I would assume that you have to create a 'hot spot' with the iPad 3G and not sure how that is going to work when you are on the move or is there a GPS feature. Let us know how it works.

With all that we will have to use the sat. GPS of the Rand McNalley 7710.
