air compressor suggestions

Need advice on portable air compressor. I would like it for de-winterizing on the road and other jobs like possible tire fill. The more compact the better but big enough to get the job done...

1st question, what kind of tire pressure you need?

Generally I like my "Slim" brand compressor. I was surprised I could reset a tire on a rim. Not sure how good it would be at high pressure.

Vair makes really good compressors

Viair and several others make good portable 12V compressors, many with pressure gauges in-line. Just get one that is capable of the pressure you would need for your highest PSI tire. When bleeding water from plumbing lines be careful not to use too much pressure or air volume. Mine has also come in handy for those unexpected times as well as for bike tires, etc.

Viair, and spend the money for a unit that will handle 150 psi. You will not be sorry. I keep mine in the Jeep. The Jeep is always with me on trips.

I also purchased and extra coiled air hose for the unit and boy was that a good choice when it comes to airing tires from the battery location.

Almost full-timing now and needed a portable, high pressure compressor with a long hose. Got this and checked the rear duals and front tires from one power source. Kinda pricey, but comes with everything for RV tires and toys.

CFM - Cubic Feet of Air Per-minute means just as much as PSI does.

Valuable information when considering the use of a air compressor. I have tried to use the smaller compressors and when filling a tire (truck tires), it is a doable. However when using the "Blow Out" method of winterizing I have had issues, even with a 10gal air compressor.

Oil free air compressors have reeds that flex to develop pressure. With continuous usage these reeds expand and do not deliver consistent performance.

While winterizing my 5r I ran my 10 gallon horizontal compressor a lot. The reeds would not seal and I thought I broke it. I couldn't even get 30pis from it. I shut it down for a couple days, thought I broke it, and phone friend for help. He told me the reeds often contract (cool down) given time (24hrs) and hopefully reseat, and they did. So if your using it a lot, you got to give it rest periods.

I have a Viair and it does everything I ask it to do. 80 psi in the truck/camper tires in minutes. Remember, compressors that plug into a cigarette lighter probably won't do the job or struggle mightily with it. This is the one I have.

Hmm, I feel alone in having a 115v pancake compressor and a smaller 12v unit. Shore power or genny for the larger pancake saves lots of tear on the battery.

There are a lot of these threads, but this is first time I have seen someone ask about de-winterizing. I use my battery powered portable for a quick winterization in a hurry if a storm is on the way. I have literally done it at a rest stop in TX on the way back to CO. I have never put antifreeze in the water lines, ever so, I cannot say I have used it to de-winterize. I cannot see it would be a problem, though.

I don't need power to do this and I got new cordless tools to go with it

ViAir on the road when we travel, and pancake at home. Had to call a service guy on the road last year due to a slow leak (thankful for the spare - peace of mind), and he couldn’t get his compressor working. I pulled out the ViAir and he was blown away by it...took a picture to show his boss. Li’l sucker works like a charm. They have a higher pressure as well as an RV model - Higher pressure was a tad cheaper and works equally as well. The thing is built solid.

A rusty inside air compressor tank can send rust, etc into your water lines.

I really like my VIAIR 400P compressor.

You can buy this winterizing kit on Amazon for $40 that will work with any compressor. I built my own kit for way less. Harbor Freight has the fittings, or on Amazon or eBay.

I bought a harbor freight tools 3 gallon 100 psi air compressor for 59.99. With a coupon you can get em for 39.99. Mine airs up my motor home tires just fine, plugs into 110.

Take a look at the Ryobi 18 volt cordless one with a tank. You can get them at HomeDepot or on-line.

I bought the 400P-RV also. Great machine. Again the important question is what air pressure you need to reach. I have a regular tank air compressor at home that claims it will reach 125 psi. It may if you have all day. So you can buy a cheap Harbor Freight 110v compressor if you are only pumping to 80# but if you need to make 110 psi you had best get a good compressor and the 400P- RV will do the job. By the way for the member who said he was from South Dakota for tax purposes, I would advertise to the Franchise tax board that you really don't live in Sioux Falls SD. They do audits and know about South Dakota and Montana. Keep all receipts and don't use your credit card when you are "visiting" California. Cheers

Viair is the best. I carry a 440p due to the truck having 37” tires.
