Another (different) Generator Question

Any one with a duel fuel tap into the on board propane via the out door grill fitting? Think I want to extend the run time on my Champion 3100. I'll have to convert this one or get a new duel fuel.

Seems like it would work no problem. I've actually thought of this as well

Edd

I am tossing around the idea of having a propane genny mounted on a hitch mounted utility rack. Then running the propane line from BBQ quick connect to genny and plugging in a short shore power cord directly into genny so I could travel in hot Texas summers with AC on so the rig is cool when I arrive. Maybe a crazy idea but I think it'll work

Might have to rethink this. I carry the gen in the TV bed, this is a great idea. Love the forum for ideas like this.

Different gensets

I may be offering info most of you know about propane generators, but here goes. Be aware a propane generator has 10% less power (watts) in continuous run mode.

One thing I would be concerned about with that generator would be rate of fuel consumption, but I do not know how long your camping stays are, or what your access to propane looks like where you camp at.

I use a propane generator at home and I am curious about the specs on that durostar. The generator you linked says 10 hours at half load on propane, but what size propane cylinder are they using to get that number? My 3000w propane generator gets about 10 hours at half load on a 20 lbs bottle, so I am assuming with this 10k generator they are using a larger cylinder to be able to advertise 10 hours run time at 50% load.

edit... i misread it actually says 20 hours on propane....Makes me wonder even more.

I'd stay away from that one. Get an inverter like the champion 3400 duel fuel remote start.

The features I like about the genny are:

50 amp receptacle
Low noise level
10000 watt
Reasonable price
Reviews are pretty good.

I haven't made a final decision yet

How much does that thing weigh? I read thru the entire specifications and didn't see the weight listed.

Whoa! I didn't realize it weighed that much. I may need to rethink it. The rear accessory hitch is only rated for 300 lbs.

The same manufacturer has a 4850w dual fuel that weighs 180lbs and probably still makes enough juice for you needs. (I have no clue on your specific power needs)

72 dBA is not quite, the 48 at idle is. I do like the 50amp outlet

That thing is load as hell, heavy. dirty power. When it craps where do you have to send it for warranty work. I bet that the warranty is much good at all. If you think this is the type of genny you want, you'd be far better off with one of the harbor freight ones.

I would really look into mounting your planned 260lbs plus genset on the rear of your trailer. Not only is the rear framing weak in this area but also note this is a very long distance back from your dual axles reducing the tongue weights. Being a fifth wheel hitch is going to help in this situation unlike what would might happen to you using a pulled trailer hitch.

I would really look into one of those IDAHO TOTE extension to the 5th wheel frame that has swivel wheels under it for support to carry your heavy genset on the rear of the fifth wheel...

google image

Your pick of genset appears to be a rather loud one with the 72DB noise numbers. Will be ok running it when being pulled down the road but running it at public camp ground may be another issue...

just some of my thought for your planning process...
