Antenna leaking

Found my leak; the winegard antenna was leaking. Some exploratory investigation showed rusty screws but perfect screw heads.

So now what?

Do I attempt to clean and replace the antenna? Or do I toss the antenna and patch the roof... to heck with over the air television?

If I patch.... do they sell sheets of alpha?

You can get patches of roofing material at RV stores or use Ethernabond tape wide enough.

Eterna bond I've used before, but this repair has considerable Dicor still adhered, that would prevent perfect laydown of the tape.

Yeah you have to prepare your work area first that seems logic to me. Then apply the patch material and finish with dicor.

Yep! Thank you for the quick messaging. I'm going to spend the time to clean the Dicor so that it's level with the roof.

I will employ a straight razor and mineral spirits.

You may want to try a plastic putty knife instead of the straight razor. You don't want to cut the roof membrane.

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not.

Hi Witt, 100% agree. Tomorrow morning after the morning sun warms the Dicor I'll have much better putty knife workability.

Where did you notice the water coming inside? Usually they leak by the crank handle and it's due to lack of cleaning and lubrication, which requires removal every year or so. Your's is a whole different animal. Looks like it did come from the screws.

I do like my OTA antenna sometimes, but if I had to replace it it'd be with something else. Most times we just use the sat dish - DirecTV.

Good job finding that leak. My parents had a leak there, and it took years to find it. As the water followed the antenna cable, the transfered to a beam or some other place depending on how level they where.

I have placed eternabond on all my seams, vents, etc, except for the antenna. My plan is to shave back the caulking at each screw, then apply a few 6" wide sheets. Then I never have to check caulking again. Still have to check for tears and so forth.

Maybe installing a "King" Omnidirectional antenna is better. So far I have had always good luck with no leaking antenna's. But reception is poor with the Winegard Antenna's special in Canada with long distance between cities.

This leak manifested in two locations; the first was as a puddle in a ceiling dome light. The second was when I saw it dripping from the control panel. when the control panel leak happened, I tore out the backing of the cabinet and exposed the backside of the panel.

This leak wasn't coming down the mechanism, but rather from under the factory Dicor. They spooged so much Dicor that several voids occurred. Evidently over the past four seasons, those voids in the Dicor cracked, and slowly let water to seep under the winegard baseplate. It has been progressing.

So, my plan is to NOT replace the antenna, but clean the Dicor enough, and lay in some plywood into the footprint, then eterna bond the whole thing.

I wish I had some of the 12" tape!

The Omni directionals do not crank or rotate, so I assume less flexing of the Dicor?

Just to close this chapter, I'm uploading my repair sequence.

Firstly this morning I was able to peel up the old Dicor, leaving a clean surface on the alpha. I also used mineral spirits to clean the surface.

Then I cut a piece of 1/4" plywood, tapered each side, and rough sanded. I used silicone adhesive on the underside of the plywood. I also ran a bead of alpha 1021 (the "dicor" recommended sealant)

I used SS self tapping screws.

Then I precut my strips of 4" eterna bond

Starting curbside I laid down the eternabond, rolling it with a dowel.

No more antenna for me!
