Anybody towing a Ford Explorer?

I want to flat tow our 2007 ford explorer 4×4 behind our 2015 Greyhawk 31FS. Can it handle that vehicle? Set up/brand recommendations? Thanks in advance.

We now tow a 2012 Ford Edge FWD (empty weight about 4200 lbs.) behind our 2012 31DS, and it poses no problem. We used to tow a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 (empty weight about 4600 lbs.) and it was a bit of a "tail-wags-dog" issue but not terrible. It looks to me like the 2007 Explorer 4x4 would run about 4600 lbs., so you may be pushing it some.

For both we use a Blue Ox Adventa II (they now sell the Aventa LX instead) rated at 10,000 lbs., Blue Ox base plate kit, and a RViBrake 2 brake system. We are happy with all of these.

Do you think 400 lbs made that big of a difference? Would a upgraded brake controller compensate?

It made a difference, no question, but as far as how much I cannot say.

I think you need to do some research here on flat towing; towing a car has nothing to do with "brake controllers", that is only for trailers. A car needs to have a separate system that actually presses on the brake pedal of the towed vehicle. There are a lot of choices, mine is one of many.

I guess what I meant to ask was the difference of 400 lbs noticeable in breaking, overall handling, or acceleration. Thanks for your replies! 😊

It was felt mostly on handling, with tail wagging and side winds. If I felt it on acceleration or hills it wasn't much, and the toad braking system took care of the braking so it made no perceptible difference.

Did your rig have the J-RIDE suspension? I wonder if the suspension upgrades would compensate.

No, the 2012 Greyhawk does not have the full J-Ride. I have installed a Roadmaster RSSC Reflex Stabilizer Unit which helps with front end wander

I do not have an opinion as to whether J-ride would help or not.
