Awning motor cover blew off

the outer side of my awning motor cover blew off. it appears it was only snapped on, but looking at the new part it has screw holes. Did jayco leave the screws out? Wonder what size I need to buy so the cover don't come off again?

The covers are brand and model specific but take a look at these for a possible fit.

I have the replacement cover, just looking for guidance if anybody has put them back on with screws, and what size it was.

I can't help with the screw size, but they more than likely will be machine thread screws. I'd make a trip to a hardware store with a decent hardware selection and grab an employee for assistance to get the right gauge and length. There may be different lengths needed.

If the screws go into plastic, there are special screws for that but sheet metal screws will work ok if you don't torque them to hard. Try to get the screw biting into the plastic right away and just snug them up. If the mating part was already screwed into, turn the screw backwards until it "falls" into the existing thread and then snug it up.

I met a guy at a campground recently who dealt with this multiple times. The last time he replaced it, he drilled a couple holes and put black zip ties through it. Hasn’t had an issue since and it’s not noticeable unless you look for it.

On mine, the screws loosened and fell out. I caught it before the cover flew off. I replaced them with a stainless sheet metal screw. if I remember it was #8 or #6 size and 1/2 in long.

The tie wrap idea sounds like extra security. Those replacements are expensive.

Thanks Norty1. This gives me something to take with me when I go to the RV storage yard to install the cover so hopefully its not several trips to hardware store.

I did the zip tie trick over a year ago. My cover is black, and I used a black zip tie. It's held up for over 5000 miles.

I forgot to add that I put a small Eternabond patch over the screws to resist un- screwing. I am not positive on the screws size and length as I grabbed them from a jar of spares on trip. I'll measure one tomorrow when I go out to add the tie wraps.

does the zip tie go around it, or do you drill the screw hole all the way through and put one zip tie through each screw hole?

Here is a pic of mine. Carefree of Colorado. It has 6 screws anchored in the plastic housing and 2 that have to be machine screws down the middle. I put tape over mine to keep dirt daubers from filling them as mine were all filled with mud. I took the sheet metal screws out and found some plastic ones in my junk pile. They all look like 1/2 inch long. No clue of the thread size. Machine screw is 6-32 x 1/2.
My cover was damaged by a limb and I placed a fender washer over the hole and replaced the screw.
I included a picture of my source of various screws.

I’m thinking just wrapping a tie wrap around the whole thing. 8 screws would have to fall out for it to fall off.

The plastic end of our awning were cracked and smashed in a hail storm. Gorilla tape has held them together plenty good enough for several years now.

I lost one of mine as well. One day it was just not there, my wife noticed it. The replacement the dealer sent to me under warranty. Mine has the front cover and a back cover. The replacement comes as a whole kit, so I still have the back piece in the shop. I can't remember if it came with screws.

my dealer SOLD me my replacement and RV will be 1 year old in February. I guess they are tired of working on it after they took almost 1 month to add a single solar panel than 2 months to put a whole new front on it 2 times. anyway I just need to get over to the storage area and look at it. it appears to have 4 snaps on each side PLUS 2 stalks that screws tap into. But I need to find out of the back side has the screw holes as well. Maybe this weekend. I will have to open the awning to put screws in but RV is parked under a pole tarp cover and not sure if its wide enough to get awning out far enough.

Interesting, I was cleaning up my garage yesterday and I found a black plastic part and I had no idea what it was for. As read this thread, I realized that it is the rear awning roll end cover. Years ago the front cover disappeared and the dealer just gave me both ends.

Save it, you will likely need it some day.

I ended sticking mine on with Tape. the snaps (all factory used) are junk. I tried to put #8 screws in but the heads are to big and they got stuck in the holes before they could go thorugh enough to thread into the new cover. so until I get time buy a couple #6 screws then a tool to press the stuck number 8's out the tape should hold.
