I don't know anything about a Tahoe, but the vehicles I have owned had a parking light setting besides On and Auto. It is the parking lights you need, so of course the headlight being on will do it. Auto does not turn the parking lights on, on mine, except when it is dark.
On my particular F150, the DRLs are on only in the Auto mode, but normally would not include parking lights. In the computer programming there is an option to change just about everything with the DRLs, including making them just parking lights, just low beams, just high beams, low or high with parking. Low is the default, without parking. I left the low in place and added parking.
