I’m no expert, and can’t be sure it matters, but I hook up positive first then negative.

Here's my method and theory. Positive first. If you happen to ground the edge of the wrench to frame tightening the postive. No arching or sparks. Put negative on last and ensure you have wrench such that it cannot touch positive post or clamp. Has worked for me on everything I own with a batteries. Also beware of your fingers with any metal rings. Wedding bands school ring etc. Will arch, spark and conduct

If something is drawing power yes.
Probably your poop an carbon monoxide sensor. Should not be a big arch

Thank you. I appreciate the help. I kind freak out when I see sparks. It wasn't a big ark at all. Once I saw you say it might ark, I was cool with it. Got it done. Again, Thank you.

Hmmm, a poop sensor? I’d get one but the Bride says it’d go off when I picked it up.

Automotive school and Electrical Engineering classes all specify that the negative terminal of a 12 volt system is always hooked up last and disconnected first.

I took automotive in high school and might just have learned it then. That would be way back in the early 70s
