Battery Monitor Question

On a LCD battery monitor (below) is it ok to install the shunt directly to the negative terminal or should there be a wire between the shunt and the terminal? If there should be a wire why?

As far as functionality there would be no difference. The reason to run a cable from the shunt to the battery is to better protect the shunt by allowing you to place the shunt in a location that is better protected and to reduce any strain in\on the shunt that may occur otherwise. The shunt itself isn't all that strong like a cable is. ~CA
