Bearing/Hub Temperatures

Curious what temps are considered “normal” for bearings/hubs, and when I should be concerned. I have one that is running about 40’ warmer than the others, and while it’s hot, I can hold my hand on it. We’re about 400 miles from home and not in a position to start taking things apart so I was just going to try adding some grease to get us home. Am I asking for trouble doing that?

Thanks in advance for the help.

check it at every gas stop.. if you can't hold your hand on it then you are very close to failure... you should be able to make it.. but check early check often keep an eye on the mirrors and watch for smoke...

if you can get grease in it with the zirk on the spindle make sure you turn the wheel while you add it so you don't blow the grease through the back seal...

also check to make sure it isn't the brakes when you have it jacked up .. spin the wheel.. it should spin freely...

Is it the hub or brake? If you can get your wheel up on a block or two to free spin the hub in question it could tell you a lot. Try and take a peek in the adjustment access hole to see if some loose parts are hanging around.

If there is nothing you can hear then I agree that adding a little grease through the ez-lube while spinning the wheel should lower the stress until you get home.

I lost a brake adjuster and that wheel and tire temp was over 20 degrees above all other tires indicating an issue. Gutted the brake to get home.
