Black tank flush question

Can't find the answer in my owners manual:
I have a 26BH elite.. It came with the black tank flush option. There is a sticker above th hookup that says to keep gate valve open when using the flush system.. Why? Is it just a CYA so people don't flood the trailer?
I would think to close the gate valve while this blasts the inside of the tank, while filling tank to 2/3rds full... Then open the valve for a good flush... Repeat till satisfied...
Any help?

It's CYA -- I routinely run mine with the valve closed.

Don't walk away while rinsing the tank, especially if the valve is closed. It can quickly create a mess in the bathroom that you don't want.

I hook up my flusher an turn it on. Give it a few minutes to get everything stirred up before opening the dump valve. I let it run while I am hooking up the dump hose.

3x, but keep an eye on the level in the tank! Don't ask me why.

I run mine for a few minutes then pull the handle. You can also monitor the level by looking through the toilet. Just dont rely on the monitors they are hardly ever accurate. Hate to see your camper flooded with....

Experience will tell you. Listen to the splash. You can tell when it is close to full, believe it.

I wondered about that too then got to thinking the tank is air tight except for the dump valve and the toilet. Hopefully it is air tiight! If it really is air tight you could theoretically overpressure the tank filling it with water and not allowing the displaced air to get out. Probably a good idea to look at the level through the toilet while doing this?

The black water tank is NOT air tight. There is a roof vent.

On another one of these discussions, someone asked Jayco point blank why you couldn't fill with the valve closed. She (the rep over the phone) told him it was due to risk of overfilling the tank, which as you can imagine creates a HUGE disaster. So there you go.

Suggestions:
1) Don't walk away for the risk of getting distracted and forgetting to open the valve or turn off the water and

2) don't trust your tank monitors, I use my ears; the sound changes as the tank fills. Also, it takes some time to fill the tank this way, so be patient.

And don't walk away... oh wait, did I say that already? Don't walk away!

You ever see Robin Williams movie "RV" with the sewage spewing from the vent pipe?
I also close my valve while the rinse is on, never for more than 30 seconds though.

Maybe I'm using the flusher wrong but I've been running it just after emptying the black tank. Where is the flusher mounted in the tank? If it's below water line, I can’t imagine the pressure from a faucet is strong enough for the flusher to stir 30 plus gallons around and effectively clean the sensors or the walls of the tank.

I installed one on my old trailer and loved it. My 26BHS didn't come with one and the local RV shop is reluctant to install one as they have been known to leak (his opinion).

I would consider installing one myself, but the corragated plastic on the underside of the trailer is holding me back. I really don't want to cut into that if I don't have to.

Any suggestions?

dont cut it just remove the screws down the side and pull it back i have had my corrugated down a few times dealing with tank issues and its not too bad ... just make sure you get all the screws and the propane line block screws also if they are in the way

You can pretty accurately measure the gpm of the water output by filling a five gallon bucket and timing it. Then you know the capacity of your black tank so can figure how long you can run the flush before filling the tank. Suggest you fill no more than 50% of capacity and then dump. Also get the flash lite and take a peek. You don't want to get distracted when you are doing this.

Just as a suggestion, WalMart has a wand-type item that attaches to a garden hose that you can put down the toilet in order to flush the black tank. It may not be as convenient but it does a good job and for around $7 bucks it's a deal. Our RV has an installed black tank rinser but we use the "wand" in addition and find that it does a better job.

If you use it with routine and it was properly installed (meaning it sprays on the sensors) I would trust your sensors. However, that said, I would have monitors posted until I knew for sure. One on the monitor, one looking into the open toilet seat, another on the valve. (OK might be overkill). I run mine to full, then stroll outside the TT and over to the black valve to pull it. If no one is around, I may do this a couple of times before I'm done at the dump station.
