Both TVs' Audio are Distorted / Fuzzy Sounding

I have 2 TVs in my trailer and, when using the antenna signal on any channel, they both have distorted sounding audio. They are OK when using other audio inputs to the TVs. Seems as if the only common component is the Winegard Sensar Antenna System.

The power button is activated and the red light is on for the antenna control panel. The video picture is good. All of the 10 or so received stations are digital. I suspect, however, that the antenna system is just not right. The problem is occurring in a very rural area away from any potential interference sites.

Any thoughts /ideas/ suggestions will be appreciated. I am going to call Winegard next week to see what they have to say about this.

We get distortion when the radio speakers are on. If speakers A or B are on we get an echo.

Next time try turning the tv sound all the way down. I've found that when passing audio through from the tv to the stereo that a digital delay can occur, which sounds like an echo. If this fixes things, see if there is a setting in the tv for speakers off.
If you aren't using the digital out from the tv (the analog red and white wires) then you could get audio that has been amplified twice, maybe making things sound garbled.

Guys,

Please do not hijack my post to talk about issues other than what I am experiencing.

I was thinking that this info may actually help you too.

I had another thought. Before checking into an antenna problem, is there any way you could test the TV with cable? If so, and the sound is still funky, then you could assume the antenna was not the problem. What about when watching a DVD?
The reason I'm inclined to not think it's the antenna is that, by nature, a digital signal is either good or not there at all, unlike analog where you can get a weak signal and still watch/listen. Digital just has a threshold where it isn't there, period.

As mentioned above, the audio is OK with other inputs....like DVD. This is happening on TWO TVs, so it has to be something common to the the two.

I agree that typically either you have or you don't have a digital audio/video signal. I am perplexed over what is going on. I might try to see what a set of rabbit ears will do. Another very experienced RV'r told me that the problem is interference from somewhere, even though the signal is digital.

You did ask for thoughts and ideas in your original post and several people offered thoughts and ideas. Good luck with your problem.

Check all the cable connections, especially those to and from the ant amp. I would disconnect and look to see if there is a stray piece of braid wire in the end of one of the coax connections touching the center conductor.

Found the problem (by accident). Since trailer is permanently installed at hunting club, I had removed the battery to prevent theft. I decided to re-install battery because occasionally we would lose power and my fridge would not switch over to gas without the battery. Low and behold.......hooking up the battery eliminated the interference. Apparently the battery "absorbs" high frequency noise / spikes etc from the converter!

Thanks for your suggestions.

That is interesting... IMO its a good idea to keep the battery in whenever you are going to be using the unit on a regular basis anyway. I always assumed that with out a good battery hooked up, and the power plugged in, the inverter would have to work overtime to keep everything going. The only time I leave the camper without a battery is in the winter...

I am reviving this thread because I am still noticing a smaller amount of audio distortion even with the battery installed. I am thinking that my load center must just be producing not so clean power. This reminds me of the old days when I had to install an ignition noise suppressor / filter in my car to reduce ignition noise being picked up by my aftermarket stereo system. It worked well!

My Load Center is an IOTA ILC Series. Not sure of model but it is either 3045, 3055, 5045, or 5055. Will check next time at hunt club. I am going to talk to the IOTA people today, and see what they have to say. I suspect that a filtering capacitor or something similar can be installed across the battery terminals to further clean up the power.

Anyone have any experience with this noise phenomena? Any remedies/thoughts?

Thanks much!

Not sure if this is related, but I have been getting "noise" on my radio when I have some of my lights on. I switched out most of my incandescent lights to LED's. I've found the ones near the radio will cause interference when they are turned on. Since I typically only listen to radio during the day, I just turn the lights off when using the radio. Like I said, I'm not sure if this is related to what you're experiencing, but it's worth a try.

Seems like you could prove if it is or is not the converter making noise by turning off or disconnecting the converter or turning off its breaker. If the noise is still there, it is not the converter.

RVHiker,

Thanks! Why didn't I think of that? I'll give it a try.

Sorry, my bad.

Too used to boondocking. No TV for 5 days at a time is one of our luxuries.
