Charging from my truck NEED HELP PLEASE

So I went to my trailer the other day and my battery was dead as a nail. The tongue jack did not move. When I connected to my 2015 F-150 there was still no power to the trailer or Jack. Is there something I am missing? Do I need to connect something in the truck or does the trailer cable not charge the battery? I see a lot of people on here mention that they can connect their truck to the camper to charge the battery but I do not see how this is possible. What am I missing here?

I guess the other question I am asking is does the 7-Way RV Trailer Connector charge your RV battery?

Welcome to JOF

Yes, the TV's 7-pin connector will charge the TT battery but at a very slow rate (1amp-2amps). Using jumper cables from the TV battery to the TT battery (if possible) will charge the battery faster.

Check your battery terminals for a solid connection......, I'm sure others will chime in with additional info.

I assume that your TV's 7-pin connection has been connected to your present TT before and it functioned properly.

So when I connected my truck to the trailer the tongue jack should have started working off the truck power right? It did not budge when I connected the 7 pin to my F-150 and my truck identified the trailer. This is weird.

I bet there's a blown fuse or something because you should be able to use the tongue jack without even having a battery installed. Connecting to your truck, if it's running should give you instant power.

This was my thinking as well. IDK what it is doing.

I know on mine there's a fuze just off the jack that blows very easily. If I extend or retract even a tiny bit to much. Worth changing it out and trying that.

There is a fuse in the trailer's tongue jack power supply line. If the jack is over extended (in either direction) it blows the fuse. This is the usual problem.

Also, I've read on this forum that some vehicles have a fuse in the circuit that supplies 12v power to the vehicle's 7-pin connector. Some members say that their fuse was not installed from the factory.

IMO, those fuses would be the first things to check.

2015 F-150, right? Seems to me I've seen several threads about issues with the necessary relay not being installed, although it comes with the truck and is usually found in the glove box.

Also, did your control panel in the truck show that the trailer is connected? It should! Not sure you'll get anything until it does. Situation calls for reading the manual.

Another quick fix might be trading that Ford in for a GM!

x2 on the fuse that you may need to install. I had to do this on my '13 F150. Once installed I had plenty of power to the TT from the TV to run the jacks, lights, water pump, etc. Keep in mind the TV has to be running to supply power (at least it does in my case).

Fixed X2!!! Lol

It really doesn't matter what brand it is, they all can be great, or be a pain in the ..... Lol

Gidor,

As mentioned, look for a fuse or relay that needs to be installed in the truck. I would believe 99% (if not 100%) of the tow vehicles have a fuse to protect from a short. Our '10 Chevy didn't have the fuse installed or the wire on the terminal stud. I guess the manufactures do this since they don't know if the trucks will be used as "real" trucks or as grocery getters. Less chance of a short that way, but it is a quick and easy job to "finish".

How long did you leave the truck hooked up before giving up? Is it possible the battery was dead enough it was going to take longer to charge? The jack should have worked when plugged in as mentioned, but just a thought.

Is your trailer plugged in while stored? If not, did you disconnect the battery? The propane detector will kill the battery in just a few days or so if left connected. That is why I mounted a Blue Sea disconnect switch for my battery in the battery box. One 1/4 turn, and all power draw is eliminated. Check my signature link for pics.

Good luck!!!

My 2013 F150 had this same issue. It was an easy fix. Check your vehicle owner's manual for the fuse location for the 7 pin connection. It should be in the main fuse box. My fuse relay was not installed, it was in a small bag in the glovebox. If its missing and not in the truck it will cost about $20 at a Ford parts counter. I never did bother to find out why they don't come pre-installed but some dealers will do it during there pre-sale prep while others simply don't bother.

The 2015 F150 relay and fuse should already be installed (prior years were not).... read the following ref this issue for 2015 and 2016 F150...

The following I found on another forum:

"Hooked my utility trailer up today, here's what I learned. Connect the trailer, then switch the ignition to accessory mode you will see a message that the trailer is connected. Name the trailer also enter the details about the trailer. If equipped, your blind spot and cross traffic alert will be disabled automatically.
when you start the truck it will power up the 12v terminal and charge the auxiliary battery. (Trailer battery voltage went from 12.4 to 13.6)
if you slide the brake controller you will see the gain setting and bar in the info panel. If you get a "Trailer disconnected" message the controller is not operating the trailer brakes. (Mine had a broken wire in the trailer harness).
Red lights come on in the info center to indicate running lights are working when you turn them on. Green marks indicate the other lights are functioning correctly.
In general the system works beautifully."

"
I see someone already beat me to it, but I can confirm the 7 pin plug back to the system center is an intelligent plug. It has to see a "load" before it will start the charging process.

If you see the "trailer connected" message on your display, charging will start.

I was not able to get a trailer connected message the first time, until I went into the display and gave the trailer a name, selected the brake type, then set it as the default trailer. Once I did that, trailer connected came on. Charge line went active. After that one setup, it gets it every time."
