Cleaning the ac filter

I noticed that the filter in my ac looked very dirty last time we were camping. I removed the 4 screws thinking I could just pull the filter out, but the I can"t get the grate over the knobs for the temp control on the unit. Does anyone know if those knobs just pull off or how I do I get at the filter so I can clean\replace it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Not sure which ac you have, but usually there are a couple of large black plastic screws holding the grate up. A quarter on on them usually releases them. I don't think you have to remove any knobs.

The filter i only on one side that should just drop down when the retaining bolts are turned. then the filter is right there most just rinse and replace

Yup, mine too. It's a Coleman. The black plastic retainers, 1/4 turn and the center section drops down. The filters are about 4 x 10 and there are 2 of them. It suprises me how fast "stuff" collects on them. This season we use the A/C round the clock and they seem to need cleaning every 4 - 5 days. I wash them in the sink with a little dish detergent and blot mostly dry and then put them back in and let the airflow finish drying them.

I called my local Jayco dealer and they told me that the 2 knobs just pull off. I then put a little muscle into it and they pulled right off. It was just a snug fit. I pulled the filter out and gave it a good cleaning. Now it is back in and ready for our next trip. Thanks for all the help and suggestions though.

You got it. The older Coleman A/C units like ours have to pull off the knobs like you did. Sometimes to save a few minutes, I'll just use the vacuum and clean the filter out while still in the unit. Not quite as effective, but works in a pinch.
