CO/Smoke Alarm Replacement
Our 377 is 4.5 years old and I am thinking that I should replace the CO and Smoke alarms. Being a FF I know that most alarms are good for up to 5 years and some 7 but when I look at the replacement alarms they say that they have a 10 year warranty. How often does everyone with an older unit replace theirs?

The CO alarms have an expiration date on them. You can remove yours and see what the date on the back says. Be careful when you buy a new one to determine what date is stamped on it. Some sites will only tell you that it is new.

RV CO. Alarms for most of us about 5yrs max before you get that constant chirp.
My smoke alarms are going on 9 yrs now so since this reminded me I think it's time to replace them.

My CO/Propane detector/alarm is now going onto it's 8th year. I test twice a year and keep the inside clean using a dirt devil. Good thing about these alarms is they tell you when they need replacing due to their constant beeping. I do have a spare as I know I'm pushing my luck.

I am doubting that the way to tell that the detector is bad is that they beep constantly. If they go bad they also may not beep even when they are supposed to!

Ours started the 'end-of-life' beeping at the convenient time of 3:00 am, after about 5 years. The combo units can be purchased more reasonably lately.

I'm curious as if there is another way to tell if they are bad without the constant beeping. When I test it the alarm the green light is on and when I push the button it sounds quite loudly and the red light comes on as well with both lights flashing constantly as they should. It then goes back to the green light default setting, so I have to assume it is still functioning. These alarms are quite sensitive to dirt/dust and other things and keeping them clean inside is paramount to their longevity. If anyone has another way to test whether they are bad other than from the beeping, I'd appreciate the info. All the videos I've watched on the Safe-T-Alert units say the beeping is the indicator of the unit failing.

I took our last one apart after I replaced it, and it's a printed circuit board inside. Not being an electrical engineer type person, I don't know what could be tested like you say. I know they have an expiration time frame, but have wondered if it was from the time it's hooked up to 12 volt power, or from the time it was actually manufactured. I just know, when it does give up the ghost, it seems it's never at a convenient time of day.

There is a law someplace that says CO and smoke alarms can only go bad and screech between the hours of midnight and 3a.m. Mine have always been fully law-abiding.

I believe there is a heating element inside the unit that is the part that fails. About the only way to really test it would be to introduce some propane and then some carbon monoxide to the unit and see if it goes off. The test button just checks power and the horn.
